Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has joined the Advisory Board of India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (I.I.M.U.N.) as the youth-led non-profit organisation marks the beginning of its 15th year. The announcement was made at the 11th edition of I.I.M.U.N.’s flagship Role Model Series, held at Mumbai’s Shanmukhananda Auditorium and Nehru Auditorium.

The event saw the participation of over 10,000 students from more than 250 schools, who attended the pro bono programme in batches. Designed to steer young minds towards value-driven leadership, the Role Model Series focuses on exposing students to individuals whose influence is rooted in contribution, conviction, and purpose rather than fleeting online popularity.
Speaking at the event, Karan Johar reflected on the difference between enduring role models and momentary internet fame. “Values that a role model carry are timeless. It’s very different from reel models who are a result of virality and are seasonal. They come and go and one may have a new reel model every second day. A role model in contrast is someone who has to live in your heart and soul forever,” he said. Emphasising longevity and emotional impact, Johar added that true role models are those whose journeys, discipline, and hard work continue to inspire on a daily basis.
Johar was part of an influential panel that included Justice DY Chandrachud, Infosys co-founder S.D. Shibulal, Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, business leader and youth icon Ananya Birla, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and former Union Cabinet Minister Sachin Pilot. The discussions, moderated by I.I.M.U.N. founder Rishabh Shah, touched upon themes such as resilience, identity, failure, patriotism, and the personal values that have shaped their careers.
For I.I.M.U.N., Johar’s addition to the Advisory Board is seen as a meaningful step in strengthening its mission to nurture thoughtful, confident, and culturally aware young Indians. Known for his ability to remain attuned to the evolving language and sensibilities of the youth, Johar’s presence brings a bridge between mainstream culture and purposeful engagement.
