With films like Animal (2023) and the recently released Dhurandhar, Hindi cinema has increasingly explored anti-heroes and morally complex characters. Moving beyond traditional romantic leads, filmmakers have been embracing darker, layered roles that drive the narrative. Sharing his perspective on this shift, actor Jaideep Ahlawat, who played the antagonist in The Family Man 3, spoke about why he believed terms like “hero” and “villain” diminished well-written characters.
“Ek shabd to hamein nikaal dena chahiye apni cinema ki dictionary se jo hai ‘villain’. Only in India, we are obsessed with the terms ‘hero’ and ‘villain’, nowhere else in the world is that used. We should avoid these words as you automatically demean the amazingly written character with it,” Jaideep said.
Jaideep, who also headlined the Amazon Prime Video series Paatal Lok, addressed whether he felt apprehensive about taking on a secondary role in The Family Man 3 alongside Manoj Bajpayee. He made it clear that the thought never crossed his mind.
“That thought never crossed my mind. I just found it as a great opportunity to act which was very different, and work with one of the finest actors that we have, some of the finest crew and join the legacy of The Family Man,” he explained.
The actor further added, “There’s nothing to lose, so what will be the apprehension? To think that why am I doing a negative role when I have my own show, is idiotic. It’s about new challenges.”
The Family Man 3 arrived last month with Manoj Bajpayee, Sharib Hashmi, and Priyamani reprising their roles, while Jaideep Ahlawat and Nimrat Kaur joined the series as new additions. Created by Raj and DK, the show received positive reviews upon release and continued to trend on the platform.
Apart from the series, Jaideep also played an antagonist earlier this year in Jewel Thief, opposite Saif Ali Khan. His performance, especially his dance in the song ‘Jaadoo’, caught audiences by surprise and showcased a different side of the actor, further adding to his growing range on screen.
