Actor Ishaan Khatter recently opened up about the debate surrounding Shahid Kapoor’s 2019 film Kabir Singh, a film that received both massive box office success and widespread criticism. In a candid interview with Zoom, Ishaan shared his views on the character and the larger conversation around the film.

The film, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, sparked a major discussion on whether it glorified toxic behaviour and violence against women. Reacting to this, Ishaan said, “If someone feels so strongly about a film, it shows how passionate our audiences are. The conversations that happened around Kabir Singh were important and necessary. I’m not saying the film was made with that intention, or that it gets a free pass because it started a conversation.”

Speaking about Shahid’s performance, Ishaan praised his brother for the depth he brought to the controversial character. “Not just as a brother, but as an actor, I saw the layers Shahid brought to that part. It’s not easy to watch or even relate to a character like that, but despite the flaws, the film connected with a huge audience,” he shared.

Ishaan added, “Shahid put in a lot of effort. He brought dignity, brokenness, and a sense of righteousness to the role. Only an actor of his calibre could do that. I’m proud of him and look up to him for the kind of hard work he puts into every role.”

Reflecting on Shahid’s overall career, Ishaan highlighted how his brother has often taken risks with his film choices. “Even before Kabir Singh, he’s done films like Haider, which was way ahead of its time. He’s constantly challenging the status quo,” he said. “He has always maintained a high standard in his work, even during commercial failures. As a public figure, you have to be responsible with what you put out. But when it comes to acting, Shahid has always given it his all,” Ishaan concluded.

Speaking of the professional front, Ishaan is currently making headlines for the screening of his film, Homebound, at the Cannes Film Festival 2025.
