As part of its grand Silver Jubilee celebration in Jaipur, Rajasthan, IIFA Weekend & Awards commemorated 25 years of cinematic excellence and global unity by hosting a highly anticipated International Women’s Day event, ‘The Journey of Women in Cinema’. This engaging conversation featured the legendary Madhuri Dixit and the globally renowned producer Guneet Monga. The event was moderated by IIFA’s Vice President, Noreen Khan.
Madhuri Dixit talked about the changing times, “There was a time when the only women on the set used to be me, my co-actors and the hairdressers. I would not see a woman in any other department. There were very, very few women directors. After I came back and walked on the sets, I saw women in every department. They are now Ads, DOPs, writers, directors etc. This is a very big change and its very heartening.”
Guneet Monga stated, “Most of my slate is female led, be it Pagglait (2021), Kathal (2023) etc. Look at the women characters in Soorarai Pottru (2020) or even in a testosterone heavy film like Kill (2024). There’s always this lens. But I feel our lens is an echo chamber and there’s a lot to be done.”
She added, “Look at the stats. Less than 3% directors are female. Less than 9% of crew members are female. I’ll like to share a very disturbing stat. Everybody tries to make their low budget film with female DOPs, when they have no money!”
Guneet Monga continued, “I think we are born in patriarchy, and we are learning feminism everyday.”
