Hungama Play’s latest Hindi original show, Ratri ke Yatri is an anthology with each episode narrating a different story. The common thread between each episode is that every story features a protagonist who visits a red light area for the first time in his life; their reasons vary, but ultimately this one visit leads to them gaining wisdom, finding solace and ends up changing their lives forever. The theme of the show sparks intrigue and a humongous star cast has ensured that expectations with this show are sky high!
Each story narrated in the show is completely different from the other. There is a man who is ashamed of being a prostitute’s son and has an awakening in a place he hates the most; a 69 year old who is unapologetic about his physical needs and doesn’t want to be shamed by the society for being human; a jilted lover who needs to move on and decides to start a new chapter in his life; an 18 year old who has to renounce all pleasures in life and wants to feel physical affection at least once; a conman who is running from the cops and seeks refuge in a red light area where he ends up losing something deeply precious to him. Each character is leading an incomplete life and visits a red light area with an ulterior motive but ends up finding wisdom and solace in a place they least expected to.
Every episode is crisp and moves at a pace that keeps the viewers’ completely engrossed. Add to that the cocktail of drama and emotions that the characters go through, makes it difficult to pause the show once you start watching it.
The makers of the show have pulled off a casting coup of sorts by getting leading television actors to play the key roles in every episode. From veteran actors like Sudhir Pande and Anju Mahendru to Iqbal Khan, Barkha Sengupta, Parag Tyagi, Avinash Mukherjee, Shiny Doshi, Renee Dhyani, Mansi Srivastava, Reyhna Pandit and Akashdeep Arora, the show is studded with some of the finest names from the world of television. Pyomri Mehta, Supriya Shukla and Indresh Malik also feature in key roles. Getting the story and cast right is half the battle won, and the makers have achieved that with Ratri ke Yatri.
A show on this theme could have easily become sleazy, however, in the deft hands of director Anil V Kumar, it walks the tight rope of being sensual, emotional and insightful, at the same time. There is no scene that feels out of place and every story succeeds in delivering an important message – the need to stop being judgemental. Credit to the director for achieving a different tone and delivering a different feel with each episode.
Ratri ke Yatri features 5 interesting stories in a single show. It is the perfect show to either watch in a single session or even with breaks in between episodes, since each episode narrates a different story. Combined with brilliant performances and superb direction, it gives you enough reasons to place it at the top of your watchlist!
