Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has opened up about one of the most difficult periods of her career, recalling how the backlash to her 2010 film Tees Maar Khan deeply affected her both professionally and emotionally.
In a recent conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast The Ranveer Show, Farah described the aftermath of the film’s release as the “darkest phase” of her career. Reflecting on that time, she said she had been riding high after delivering successful films earlier and believed her track record would protect her from harsh criticism. “I felt nobody should question me since I’d just made Om Shanti Om,” she admitted, referring to her 2007 blockbuster starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
However, the reaction to Tees Maar Khan proved far more severe than she expected. The film, which starred Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, faced heavy criticism upon release despite generating buzz with songs such as “Sheila Ki Jawani.” Farah admitted that the criticism hit her hard. “I couldn’t even get out of my bed for days,” she said while recalling the emotional toll the film’s reception had on her.
She also revealed that some people within the film industry seemed pleased about the setback. According to the filmmaker, the reaction reflected a harsh reality of show business. “In our industry, more than being happy for your success, people are happy for others’ failure,” she said, adding that some even commented, “Ab aayi na line pe,” implying she had finally been brought down to earth.
Released in 2010, Tees Maar Khan received largely negative reviews at the time, although it still performed moderately at the box office and later developed a cult following among younger audiences.
Looking back today, Farah says the experience ultimately changed her perspective on success and failure in the film industry. While the criticism was painful, she now views it as a turning point that helped her grow stronger and more resilient as a filmmaker.
