Tridha Choudhury began her work in the Bengali film industry and also worked down South and also in the TV show, Dahleez. But it was her role of Babita in the Bobby Deol-starrer web series, Aashram, which made her popular nationwide. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Tridha opened up about what the show means to her.
At the very onset, Tridha Choudhury shared an anecdote, “It’s an interesting story on how I bagged Aashram. I was in a supermarket where I met Madhvi Bhatt, the DA. She told me, ‘Tridha, I am so happy I bumped into you here. I really think that you should do this show’. Madhvi persuaded Prakash Jha sir to consider me. Sir said, ‘Nahin, woh thodi si bacchi lagegi. We have to show her as a woman’. Hence, I put on weight as he advised, ‘You can’t look so perfect for the character. You need to be weathered’. We had trainers and we worked a lot on the dialogues as well.”
Tridha continued, “It was very hard for me to believe that this project would make me a household name in India. But it has. Anywhere I go, people greet me with ‘Japnaam’; no one says ‘Namaste’ (smiles). For every actor, the show has been groundbreaking.”
When asked if a new season of Aashram is in the offing, she smiled and confessed, “Yes, we are shooting very soon, in 2026!”
Aashram is probably the most watched show in the history of Indian digital space and one of the reasons is that it has a massy treatment. Tridha remarked, “It is an informative show, at the end of the day. Cinema is 100% meant for entertainment. Like my film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 falls in that category. You are walking away with nothing but smiles and a great laugh. But Aashram is more educational as we inform the audience that ‘Satark raho. What we are showing is actually happening in the world’. So, creativity can also be an avenue to alert people in a way.”
Mental health struggles
A few months ago, Tridha Choudhury opened up about her mental health struggles quite bravely. The writer asked if she was doing fine now. Tridha replied, “While I was getting a lot of recognition for playing such a strong character in Aashram, my personal life was in tatters. The person I was with, I thought he would understand that it was a fake simulation of things. This caused friction. I was made to feel low about myself. It’s all in the past. Now, when I look back, I wonder if I should have considered that one person who was against me or the 10,000 or more people who were always in favour of me. Thankfully, at present, I am doing good.”
Future plans
When asked about her next project, Tridha said, “It is tentatively titled Akhri Sawal. We announced it at IFFI Goa last month. It stars Amit Sadh, Namashi Chakraborty and also another very special person, Sanjay Dutt. I’ll not believe I am working with him until I meet him on the set (smiles). I play the role of a university student who talks about a forgotten chapter in history.”
