One of the most-awaited shows of all time, Season 3 of The Family Man, finally dropped on Amazon Prime Video on November 21. As expected, it has been widely consumed and has become a rage on the internet. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to its dialogue writer, Sumit Arora, about the new season and a lot more.

The Family Man Season 3 is set a few years after the events of Season 2. The kids have grown up, and the dynamics have changed in the Tiwari family. Was Sumit Arora asked to ensure that these changes were reflected in the dialogues? The writer replied, “Yes, and I realized as soon as I got the script in hand. Atharv (Vedant Sinha), for example, is now a grown-up boy compared to what he was earlier. He was a teenager. Dhriti (Ashlesha Thakur), meanwhile, has become an adult. So, there has been much change. The world that they are interacting with outside the house is completely different from before. And this influences their equation with their father and their mother. Obviously, it would bring new elements in their conversations, attitude etc. I had to keep all that in mind.”
Sumit Arora continues, “JK (Sharib Hashmi), meanwhile, has his own struggle. He’s into dating and wants to get married. That is also reflected in his bond with Srikant (Manoj Bajpayee). Like when he’s in serious trouble, he fears that he’ll die a single man. In the moment of life and death, this is what he’s most worried about! Srikant gives a hilarious reply and all this comes to the fore because you need to understand what these characters are going through, as compared to what they were going through earlier.”

But the scene that takes the cake is Atharv explaining to his father that Drishti’s pronouns are they/them and not she/her. The dialogue has landed beautifully in this scene and it hasn’t hurt anybody despite it being a sensitive topic.
Sumit Arora explained, “It's indeed a great feeling. The idea was there in the screenplay; Suman Kumar had put it. For this scene, I put myself into the shoes of Srikant Tiwari. I am also from a small town as well and I understand where he comes from. Hence, if I get to hear something like that, how would I react? That’s how I came up with the line ‘You said they are worried. Who else are worried’? He’s just dumbfounded by the whole concept. I don’t think that throughout the scene, he understands or embraces what Atharv just told him. It doesn’t go inside his system at all! So, he’s not trying to make fun of it. He’s just trying to make sense of it. Hence, when he’s said that there’s no invention of it in Hindi, he replies, ‘Shukar hai, Hindi bach gayi’!

Sumit continued, “After all, he’s just wondering ki yeh kya ho raha hai! While he grew up in Banaras, his kids were born and brought up in Mumbai. So, we are just trying to look at it from that lens as well – the differences that arise due to the difference in upbringing.”
The Family Man Season 3 has ended on a cliffhanger, and a section of the audience is dejected by it. When asked his views on it, Sumit Arora explained, “The right people to talk about it would be Raj-DK and Suman. It was their decision to end it that way and that the story would continue from that point. As an audience, I would even want to know what happens further in the story. But I guess the decision was taken as the story is quite big and it could not have been finished in one season.”
