Merry Christmas, directed by the acclaimed Sriram Raghavan, is poised to make its theatrical debut on January 12, 2024. Starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, the film has been filmed in Hindi and Tamil languages, respectively. The trailer was launched in December 2023 and a press conference was held on January 4, 2024, to launch the Tamil trailer. Post that, the two stars and the director sat down with Bollywood Hungama to discuss the film. During the conversation, Sriram Raghavan clarified that initially, he did offer the film to Saif Ali Khan but when things changed in the creation of the story, he felt Saif wasn’t the right fit. Though it did upset Khan, he understood it.
Sriram Raghavan told Bollywood Hungama during BH Hangout, “Actually, I had this story for about three years. I met Katrina and she said 'Let's do something.' Then, after Andhadhun, I decided to go ahead with it. Initially, when I was looking at it, I was looking at a Hindi film, no Tamil version and all. I was thinking of Saif because I have worked with him in a couple of movies earlier. So, I thought it might be interesting. I met him and he liked the subject, he liked it very much.”
Sriram had worked with Saif Ali Khan on Ek Hasina Thi and Agent Vinod. He added, “So, when I was fleshing it out, I felt that something wasn’t feeling right, something was bothering me. Then I met Ramesh ji (Ramesh Taurani) and I said what I felt, and he said, ‘Ok, let’s go and tell him’.”
“When you go and tell an actor who had initially said that he loved it and then tell him no… It’s not that I had anyone else in mind. I want to clarify that I didn’t reject him. I sort of went and met him and he was upset,” continued the filmmaker.
