One of the most loved films of Indian cinema, Karan Arjun (1995), is all set to re-release on November 22 this year. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, the Rakesh Roshan directorial will have the biggest re-release worldwide for a Hindi film. Those expecting a re-release premiere and coming together of Shah Rukh, Salman, Kajol, Ashok Saraf, Johny Lever, etc. on November 20 or 21 would be dejected. There are no such plans.

In fact, this writer extensively scanned the internet and couldn’t find a single picture or video of the premiere of Karan Arjun. During an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Rakesh Roshan explained why he never holds a premiere for his films.

Rakesh Roshan said, “I had kept a premiere of my directorial debut, Khudgarz (1987). It was held in Metro Cinema, Mumbai and then the party was held at the Taj Mahal Hotel. The attendees of the party were badmouthing the film. I thought to myself, ‘Main picture bhi dikhau, khana bhi khilau, daaru bhi pilaau aur burai bhi sunu’. I vowed that I’d never have the premiere of any of my forthcoming films. I kept my word.”

Respecting his vow, no film premiere was held of Karan Arjun or for that matter, his other directorial ventures after Khudgarz like Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Kala Bazaar (1989), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Khel (1992), King Uncle (1993), Koyla (1997), Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000), Koi Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013).

He added, “Rekha requested me repeatedly to keep the premiere of Khoon Bhari Maang. But I was clear that I wouldn’t be able to do so.”

Talking about re-releasing Karan Arjun, Rakesh Roshan said, “The sound was in mono. I had to convert it to Dolby 5.1. I did the whole DI of the film, so that visually, it looks new. As for publicity, I followed the same strategy which I applied back then. I made posters and for single screens, I made six sheeters. In multiplexes, I put up backlit cutouts and standees. In short, aaj ka aur purane zamaane ke strategies ko mix karke I planned the publicity!”
