Gulshan Devaiah has had a successful 2025 as his film Kantara: Chapter 1 turned out to be a major success. His web show Perfect Family also garnered a lot of appreciation. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actor said that there have been ups and downs if one looks at his overall life in recent times.
“Professionally, I have had very good years from 2023,” he said. “Personally, there have been few ups and downs like deaths in the family, deaths of friends, my elder cat died from Cancer, my dad had a road accident, my mother’s health goes up and down, I have also had some health issues. There has to be a counter balance. Everything can’t be good.”
Gulshan said that he always had a feeling that Kantara: Chapter 1 is going to be successful. “It was a safe bet career wise. The first film was highly successful, so there was anticipation (for this film). I didn’t know it would make Rs. 850 crores (worldwide) but I knew the opening would be jabardast because of the anticipation people had for it. It will also impact my career in a positive way. I can now ask for more money and people will give it also,” he said and added, “But these things are incidental. Now, it’s behind me and I have moved on to other things.”
Gulshan developed a lot of respect and admiration for Rishab Shetty while working on the film. “He is a one of a kind personality,” said the actor. “He was doing so many things at the same time. He was dealing with the pressure and stress of expectations. Also the pressure of having a much bigger budget. He was a director, writer, actor and he was doing action scenes.”
Interestingly, before Kantara, Gulshan and Rishab tried collaborating on three projects but they never materialized. “It (Kantara) was the only time it worked,” said Gulshan. “Before this, there were three films with him that couldn’t happen for a variety of reasons. The third one was also announced but then the lockdown happened and the project was shelved. In the first offer, we both were going to act and somebody else was going to direct. Finally, Kantara happened.”
This year, Gulshan also appeared in the acclaimed web series Perfect Family. The show is known as Pankaj Tripathi’s maiden production. But Gulshan revealed that the veteran actor came on board later. “Ajay Rahi and Jar Pictures were the producers when we were shooting,” he said. “I think to present the show later on Pankaj ji came on board. He brought his goodwill and blessings. There is a certain expectation of quality also when Pankaj ji is present. I am very happy that he became a producer and came on board this project. I am personally interested in knowing what kind of films or shows he brings in the future.”
Gulshan will soon also be making his Tamil debut with the Netflix show Legacy. He told us that he was awestruck by R Madhavan’s look in the show. “He is a star. Main unki daadhi-moochh mein kho gaya tha. His look fills up the screen. It’s a beautiful look. I also enjoyed working with Nimisha Sajayan, who is playing my wife. She is a wonderful actor. There is also a veteran comedic actor Vaiyapuri, who is in a lot of Kamal (Haasan) sir’s films. I have a lot of scenes with him,” he said.
But Gulshan believes that Abhishek Banerjee speaking Tamil would be the biggest surprise of Legacy. “He speaks Tamil,” he said. “I didn’t know this. This will be a surprise for everyone. I won’t tell much now but you should watch the show; you will be amazed. He had studied for a few years in Tamil Nadu. So, he can speak the language somewhat.”
This year, Gulshan completed 15 years as an actor after making his debut with Shaitaan in 2010. Looking back at his journey so far, he said, “It’s a good and satisfying journey. So many others rather would like this journey. Ups and downs are a part of all journeys; I wish few things would have turned out differently. But it’s okay. I have no reasons to complain about anything. I have only become better as an actor and professional.”
