Anukalp Goswami wrote Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015) and has worked extensively on the television shows of Kapil Sharma. As he gears up for his debut directorial venture, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, the expert writer-filmmaker spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about his comic caper and a lot more.

What kind of feedback have you got for the trailer of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2?
The feedback has been great and has met the expectations that people had from this series. People are excited that Kapil Sharma is returning in a comic role, that too in a clean entertainer.
You have directed Kapil in TV shows before. How was it directing him in a film?
‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ or ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ are non-fiction. So, there’s a lot of room for improvisation and until the very end, we keep working on the script. But when directing a film, Kapil is able to switch easily. He realizes that there’s a limit to which he can improvise. He knows where to stop so that he doesn’t go out of character. Thankfully, Kapil and I have great chemistry. Since the time we discussed the one-line concept, we have been on the same page. During the shoot, he delivered more than what I wanted.
How easy or difficult was it getting the casting of the heroines (Hira Warina, Tridha Choudhary, Parul Gulati, Ayesha Khan) right?
It was a challenge because any heroine in today’s times feels insecure. They worry if they’ll get sufficient screen space or will the other heroine overpower them on screen. But when I told the heroines that they all play distinct characters, they belong to different religions and that they have equal screen space, they agreed. I also told them ‘Yeh sabhi ki film kehlaayegi, kisi ek actor ki nahin’.

How was the association with Abbas-Mustan this time? Did they share any valuable inputs to the script or during the post-production stage?
Abbas-Mustan were associated from the start, when I narrated the one-liner with them. At that stage, I expressed the desire to direct the film. They supported me fully. When the script’s draft was ready, we went for a sitting in Khandala. There, I narrated the script and all of them gave their inputs. I incorporated those suggestions in the new drafts. When the film went on floors, Abbas-Mustan and their brother and editor Hussain bhai (Hussain A Burmawala) were present. The trio told me, ‘Tujhe kisi cheez ki tension lene ki zaroorat nahin hai’. They also provided me with a great team. Thanks to these efforts, we were able to deliver a fine product.
The film deals about religion and as you know, we live in sensitive times. Did you fear any backlash?
We had that fear while writing the film. Since I have been dabbling in television for years, I understand censorship. I knew what will hurt the sentiments of the people. Hence, we have made sure that people belonging to all religions would enjoy the goings-on. The USP of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 is that a film like this is possible only in India. It’s a rare country where people of different communities live together and enjoy the festivities of each other. We have kept these aspects in mind while making the film.
Are you hopeful that the Censors will pass the film without any cuts?
I say this with a lot of happiness that the film has been passed without a single cut. The Censor Board has given the film a clean chit. They could understand that it’s a family film. I am thankful to them.
