When the ever-romantic Dharmendra romanced Sunny Deol’s on screen loves!

en Bollywood News When the ever-romantic Dharmendra romanced Sunny Deol’s on screen loves!

Have we heard of our actors sharing romantic leads with their offspring? Of course we have. Raj Kapoor shared Hema Malini (Sapnon Ka Saudagar) with both Randhir (Haath Ki Safai) and Rishi Kapoor (Ek Chaadar Maili Si, Sadiyaan), while Vinod Khanna (multiple films) and Akshaye Khanna (Dil Chahta Hai) shared Dimple Kapadia.

But, for obvious reasons, the sons worked with them later, as they even made their debuts when their fathers were past their ‘hero’ic peaks.

However, Dharmendra remains Hindi cinema’s only leading man who was to co-exist as a top star alongside son Sunny Deol! In 1987, when Sunny Deol had just had a single flop (Dacait), Dharmendra annexed 6 successes or hits among 10 releases, including that year’s top hit, Hukumat!

And the Eternal Romantic that he was (apart from his action image and his versatile essays in comedy and drama), the man was actually teamed with five heroines his son had already romanced on screen! Don’t believe this? Here’s a fact check.

Amrita Singh

In those times, star fathers usually launched their sons, and Amrita Singh was chosen by Dharmendra as his son’s first heroine in Betaab (1983). They also co-starred later in Sunny and Kroadh. In 1989, Dharmendra wooed Amrita Singh in Sachai Ki Taaqat, and went on to romance her also in Veeru Dada and Paap Ki Aandhi. But in an anti-climax, Amrita, poor girl, even got to play Dharam-ji’s younger son Bobby Deol’s mother in 23 March 1931—Shaheed (2002), another Dharmendra home production!

Dimple Kapadia

In rapid succession in two early films, Manzil Manzil (1984) and Arjun (1985), Dimple Kapadia played Sunny Deol’s love interest. But it took four years later for papa Dharmendra to fall in love (on screen, that is) with Dimple Kapadia in Batwara and Mast Kalandar. Sunny and Dimple did more films too, like Aag Ka Gola, Narsimha and Gunaah later.

Kimi Katkar

She made her debut in 1985, and Sunny co-starred with her in Vardi (1989). But Dharmendra, whose debut was a full quarter of a century earlier (!), was paired romantically with her three years later, in Humlaa (1992).

Farha

In the next Dharmendra home production for Sunny, Farha was cast with him—the film was Yateem (1989). Dharmendra also did three films with Farha from 1988 to 1991, but was cast romantically opposite her only in Kundan (1993)!

Sridevi

The first of many movies in which Sunny Deol was teamed with Sridevi was Sultanat (1986). This was followed by Ram Avtar (1988) and four more films in 1989—Joshilaay, Main Tera Dushmun (wherein both had special appearances but were cast as fiancé and fiancée), Nigahen and the cult Chaalbaaz. As for Dharmendra, though he was in the cast of Sridevi’s movies like Jaani Dost earlier, Sultanat itself and Sone Pe Suhaaga, he would finally be teamed with her only in the average success, Naakabandi (1990). Dharmendra also worked with Sridevi in Farishtay later. But she was not his love interest.

What this means!

Dharmendra had an incredible staying power as a leading man, working with four generations of heroines!

He was competition in the action genre even for beta Sunny Deol.

And finally, he remains the eternal romantic OG Greek God-like persona who could convincingly serenade heroines from his son’s generation!
