Don’t Worry Darling director and actor Olivia Wilde has finally addressed the numerous controversies surrounding her film, be it her feud with Shia LaBeouf and Florence Pugh or about the infamous ‘spit-gate’ between her rumored boyfriend Harry Styles and Chris Pine.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wilde was a guest on CBS’ The Late Show on Wednesday ahead of the Warner Bros. film’s release this Friday, where she addressed several of the rumors surrounding the film, starting with Shia LaBeouf.
Earlier this month, LaBeouf denied Wilde’s claims that he was fired from her psychological thriller film, stating that he “quit the film due to lack of rehearsal time.” He reportedly sent emails and text messages to Variety allegedly exchanged between him and Wilde, explaining his reason for stepping down from the role.
As THR notes, when the show host asked to clarify whether LaBeouf quit or was fired from the film, Wilde said that she tried to play mediator between the actor and her lead actress Florence Pugh. “Once it became clear that it was not a tenable working relationship, I was given an ultimatum,” Wilde said.
She continued, “I chose my actress, which I’m very happy I did. At the time, was I bummed that we weren’t able to make it work? Sure. Did information about him come to light later that made me confident we made the right decision? Absolutely.”

The director then went on to defend her rumored boyfriend, Harry Styles, amid claims that he spit on co-star Chris Pine during the film’s premiere screening at the Venice Film Festival. “Another one of our weird rumors, Spit-Gate, which you might have heard about, is I think …”
“He did not, but I think it’s a perfect example of people will look for drama anywhere they can,” Olivia stated when the host asked if Harry did spit on Pine “Harry did not spit on Chris, in fact...” The host then interrupted and joke, “Only time will tell.” Olivia replied, “No, he really didn’t!

Addressing the rumors that she and Pugh – who leads her new mystery-drama film – are in feud, Wilde stated, “I have nothing but respect for Florence’s talent,” she told Colbert. “She’s fantastic. She’s on the set of her movie Dune right now, and there’s nothing cooler than a busy actress. I have nothing against her in for any reason.” Wilde continued to deny the feud claims saying, “People would actually be talking about the movie itself.”
“They’re praised for being tyrannical,” she continued. “They can be investigated time and time again, it still doesn’t overtake conversations of their actual talent or about the film themselves. This is something we’ve come to expect. It is just very different standards that are created for women and men in the world at large.”
Don't Worry Darling is arriving in theaters on Friday.
