Actor Divyendu Sharma has steadily built a distinct place for himself in Hindi cinema with performances that move beyond typecasting and explore layered, complex characters. In an exclusive conversation with CNN-News18 Showsha, the actor spoke about his career journey, the choices that shaped it, and his outlook on success and ambition.
Looking back at his journey, Divyendu shared that success had not changed his core approach to acting. “I don’t think I’ve changed much as a person. I was very clear from day one that I had chosen to be an artist, an actor. I cannot look for, say, stability or societal norms of success. I do this because it gives me a high that no matter how successful or not successful I am, I’m still doing what I wanted to do always. That’s nice,” he said.
Divyendu also addressed his conscious effort to move away from the “boy-next-door” and light-hearted roles that initially brought him recognition. “Initially, I wanted to break free from the boy-next-door comedy, the happy-go-lucky guy image. Thankfully, fortunately, it happened, God-willingly. So right now, I’m in the absolute honeymoon period of my career,” he added.
When asked whether he felt content with his current position or still aspired for more, the actor offered a balanced and grounded response. “Maybe yes. But again, there is no limit to that. That depends on a lot of other people – a director who sees that kind of talent in me, a writer who has that kind of character written for me, and a production house that wants to have me. That will come automatically. But I’m not hyper-competitive or a go-getter. I want to enjoy what the present offers me. I have hopes for the future, yes, but never ever forget that what I have right now is no less,” he explained.
Divyendu further emphasised that his passion for the craft, rather than fame or accolades, remained his primary motivation.
On the work front, Divyendu was currently seen in Saali Mohabbat, a Hindi drama-thriller marking Tisca Chopra’s directorial debut. The film premiered on ZEE5 on December 12 and also starred Radhika Apte and Anurag Kashyap in key roles. Set against a dark psychological backdrop of betrayal, desire, and shifting moral boundaries, the film featured Divyendu as Ratan Pandit, a morally complex character that strongly appealed to him.
