DIVINE releases ‘You & I,’ contemporary take on Sholay’s ‘Mehbooba,’ featuring Kalyani Priyadarshan

DIVINE has released his latest single, 'You & I,' a modern reinterpretation of the iconic 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' from Sholay. The track arrives at a fitting moment, as India prepares to celebrate 50 years of the classic film, which returns to cinemas in a restored format on December 12, 2025.

The single also features actress Kalyani Priyadarshan in her first non-film music video appearance. The video, directed by Mahi Sandhu of B2GETHER PROS, draws from vintage aesthetics and presents a nostalgic love story with a contemporary sheen.

Speaking about revisiting one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable melodies, DIVINE said, “Sholay shaped so much of our collective memory, and ‘Mehbooba’ is a melody that lives forever. With ‘You & I,’ I wanted to pay tribute to that legacy while giving it a fresh energy that my fans can vibe with.”

The track, produced by ZZORAWAR, blends RD Burman’s original composition with a new sonic approach. DIVINE’s delivery—gritty yet melodic—anchors the reimagined version.

Kalyani Priyadarshan described the music video experience as a creatively refreshing departure from film shoots. “It was my first time shooting a music video. It felt different from anything I’d done before. I realised that the music world functions in its own unique rhythm,” she said. She added that the process was “flexible, instinctive and mood-driven,” and praised the team for its collaborative energy. “I walked away with a whole new appreciation for what goes into making a music video.”

You & I follows a landmark phase in DIVINE’s career, which included his AI-powered video for Aag, the single Rain, and a headlining performance at Rolling Loud’s first Mumbai edition.

The release aligns with the re-premiere of the restored Sholay, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Amjad Khan. Advanced digital restoration techniques have been used to enhance the film’s visual and audio quality for new audiences.

The track will feature on DIVINE’s upcoming fifth studio album, 'Walking On Water.' 'You & I' is released through Gully Gang Records in partnership with Universal Music and is now streaming across major platforms.
