Akshaye Khanna, who is the current cine-craze of the nation for his magnificent performance in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, won’t do any interviews just because the world wants him.
Nothing has changed about Akshaye over the years. He remains as reclusive as ever. The actor once said in a throwback interview, “I like it that way. I see no point in talking about myself unnecessarily. I'm not a high-profile person. I like being as low-profile as humanly possible. In the long run, it’s the film that matters. Talking about yourself is of no consequence. It doesn't come naturally to me.”
In another throwback interview with this writer, Akshaye had admitted that he would like to do more work. “It’s not conscious. If I had my way, I'd work 365 days a year. As for being picky, who isn't? Aren’t Abhishek (Bachchan), John (Abraham) and Hrithik (Roshan) picky? I really enjoy spending time with my co-stars, especially if they're good actors. A screen partnership is almost like a marriage, a short-term but strong commitment. If you don't get along with your unit, the film suffers. I don't work towards it. But I just get along with my co-stars. I'm a very blunt person. If I don't like someone, he or she is sure to know.”
He admitted he is picky but pertinent. “I don’t see too many other actors doing the variety of roles I am doing. I’ve become more relaxed and confident. Even today, I’m hugely lacking in self-confidence. There’s a huge level of satisfaction and turmoil. I guess that’s a part of every actor’s personality. I started acting when I was only 19. My only goal in life was to be an actor. That I am. I want to keep getting good work.”
Chhaava earlier this year and now Dhurandhar has put Akshaye Khanna in focus again. In recent years, his work had almost dried up, partly by choice and partly by destiny. The super-talented Akshaye Khanna lost his career as a leading man with his hair. Unlike other balding stars like Raj Kumar and Rakesh Roshan, Akshaye refused to wear a wig to fit into the screen hero’s mould. Happily he is now comfortable with the wig. Credit for Akshaye’s success in Chhaava and Dhurandhar. There are two things that the reclusive Akshaye Khanna was always sure of. One is he wouldn't want to share screen space with his father. The other is, he doesn't want to get married.
In a throwback interview with this writer , Akshaye had said, "I don't believe in the institution of marriage. A pundit predicted I'd definitely get married in 2009. He said he can write it in his blood, 'Iss saal teri shaadi pukki.' I was horrified. The fact is, marriage is just a legal piece of paper. I don't see why the government needs to get involved in what two people do with their lives. It's none of their business."
As for working with his late charismatic dad Vinod Khanna, that was also a no-no. "I worked with my dad in my first film Himalay Putra. It was a terrifying experience. There are certain people whom you shouldn't work with. My dad is one of them. Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan is another. To stand in the same frame as them confidently is impossible. They've such an overpowering screen presence.Even today I'd think ten times before facing the camera with my dad. In terms of physicality alone he was so powerful. As a star- son it's a constant struggle to move away from being known as Vinod Khanna's son and create my own space."
