Filmmaker Karan Johar paid an emotional tribute to Dharmendra, remembering the veteran actor as a towering figure in Indian cinema and one of the warmest individuals in the industry. Dharmendra died on November 24 at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday on December 8. The actor had been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month after a brief period of breathlessness.

Taking to Instagram, Johar wrote a deeply personal note expressing his admiration and affection for the late star. Calling him “the embodiment of a HERO in mainstream cinema,” he reflected on Dharmendra’s magnetic stardom, iconic screen presence and unmatched legacy.
Johar emphasised that beyond the films and decades-long superstardom, it was Dharmendra’s warmth that left a lasting mark. “He only had immense love and positivity for everyone,” he wrote, adding that the actor was universally cherished within the industry. The filmmaker shared that Dharmendra’s blessings and comforting hugs represented a kind of affection that is rare to find, and that his absence leaves “a gaping hole… a space that can never be filled.”
He concluded his tribute with a personal note of gratitude for having worked with him, writing, “There will always be the one and only DHARAMJI… we love you kind Sir. We will miss you so much.”
