Amitabh Bachchan, the veteran actor received the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award on wednesday. In his victory speech, the actor stated that he had never thought himself ‘worthy’ of the award. He did, however, mention that Hridyanath Mangeshkar’s efforts convinced him to attend the ceremony. He said, “He (Hridyanath) even invited me for this ceremony last year. Hridyanath ji, I apologise to you for last time. I had then told you I was unwell. I was healthy but didn’t want to come here. This year I had no excuse, so I had to come here.”
The actor also recalled an episode where, at a similar gathering he began his speech in Hindi and people chanted, “Marathi, Marathi.” He then said a line in Marathi, recognizing that he was still learning the language. However, the actor said that he has yet to learn the language.
Amitabh went down memory lane and told an interesting story. He said, “In the past years, many artists from our film industry have gone abroad to perform on stage. Perhaps people are unaware that even I did such shows, and in a way, if you consider its inception, I received the privilege of initiating it. In 1981 I was in New York, and a friend came and said that Lata ji is in New York and she wants to meet you.”
He continued, “I went to meet Lata ji, and she said, ‘There’s a program of mine here, I want you to come on stage for just two minutes and introduce me.’ I couldn’t understand why she was asking me to do this, but because she is Lata Mangeshkar, I agreed to her request.”
As Amitabh was about to leave, Lata Mangeshkar stopped him and asked, “Amitabh ji, listen, we’ve heard that you’ve recently sung a song in one of your films?” The late singer insisted that Amitabh sing the song at the event. The film was Laawaris, and the song was “Mere Angne Mein.”
Following Lata Mangeshkar's death in 2022, the family and the trust established the award in her memory.
