Renowned singer Adnan Sami, who transitioned from Pakistani to Indian citizenship in 2016, has sparked conversation with a revealing anecdote from his recent visit to Azerbaijan. In a post on X on Sunday, Sami recounted meeting a group of young Pakistani men in Baku who expressed deep frustration with their country’s military, claiming it has “destroyed” Pakistan. The encounter, shared amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions, has drawn significant attention online.

While strolling through Baku’s picturesque streets, Sami, born in the UK to a Pakistani father and an Indian mother, was approached by the group, whom he described as “very sweet.” According to his post, they told him, “Sir, you are very lucky. You left Pakistan in good time. We also want to change our citizenship. We hate our army. They have destroyed our country!” Sami responded, “I knew this long ago!” The singer, who moved to India in 2001 and became a citizen after a complex legal journey, shared the exchange with his followers, highlighting the youth’s disillusionment.

The post comes in the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir, where 26 people were killed, prompting India to revoke visas for Pakistani nationals and escalate diplomatic measures. Sami condemned the attack as a “horrific crime against humanity,” reflecting his vocal stance against terrorism.

Sami’s history with Pakistan has been contentious. He has previously alluded to mistreatment by the country’s establishment, promising to “expose the reality” of his experiences, which he claims will “shock many.” In 2022, he wrote, “I have major issues with the establishment… what they did to me for many years became one of the big reasons for me to leave Pakistan.”
