When on October 29 a journalist on X accused Abhishek Bachchan of buying his award for his exceptional performance in I Want To Talk, the actor didn’t lose his cool. Instead, he calmly responded saying he has never paid for any awards.
Stars get trolled routinely for crimes they haven’t committed. A few months ago, a self-proclaimed Hindi film critic and journalist from Pakistan took to Twitter (X) to make viral, untrue and horrific claims about Celina Jaitly and her relations with both her mentor Feroz Khan and his son Fardeen and many more bizarre accusations. Her response to his harassment and fake claims from Pakistan went viral and garnered support from millions of Twitterati, including Pak nationals.
Because the journalist was hiding in Pakistan, legal recourse was not possible for Celina and he continued to assault her character and modesty from across the border. Celina took the matter to the National Commission of Women in India. The National Commission of Women in turn initiated action upon the complaint and took the matter to Ministry of External Affairs.
Speaking exclusively on the troll culture, Abhishek Bachchan said, “Anonymity behind a computer gives the trolls a false sense of power. The best is to ignore them. When you respond, you have given them the attention they seek. I normally avoid confrontations with trolls. But when a serious allegation is made, like this one saying I bought an award, I then patiently give my point of view hoping to convince the troll that he is barking up the wrong tree.”
Abhishek has judicious advice for celebrities who are targeted by trolls. “Don’t react with anger, don’t hit back. That’s what they want. Stay calm. Remember, they want to provoke you.”
