Aamir Khan clarifies “ONLY” purpose of PK after accusations of promoting “Love Jihad”: “This is just humanity. It’s above religion”

More than a decade after the release of PK, Aamir Khan has finally addressed the persistent backlash surrounding the film. In a recent appearance on Aap Ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma, the actor firmly denied claims that the 2014 satire PK was anti-religious or promoted "love jihad." He said the film’s core message was misunderstood by some people.

“They're wrong,” said Aamir, when asked about the criticism. “We’re not against any religion. We respect all religions and all religious people. That film just tells us to be cautious of those who exploit religion to fool the common man in order to extract money from them. You'll find people like that in every religion. That was the film's only purpose.”

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, PK starred Aamir Khan as an alien who questions religious dogma and rituals as he tries to understand human society. While the film was praised for its satire and social commentary, it was also criticised by certain sections for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and portraying organised religion in a negative light.

A subplot involving a romantic relationship between a Hindu woman, played by Anushka Sharma, and a Pakistani Muslim man, played by the late Sushant Singh Rajput, also came under scrutiny. Some critics accused the film of endorsing “love jihad.” Responding to those allegations, Aamir stated, “When people from two religions, particularly Hindu and Muslim, fall in love and get married, that’s not always love jihad. This is just humanity. It’s above religion.”

The actor further questioned the logic behind the accusations, asking whether his own family’s interfaith relationships would also be seen through the same lens. Aamir’s sister Farhat is married to Rajeev Dutta, and his other sister Nikhat is married to Santosh Hegde. His daughter, Ira Khan, recently married fitness coach Nupur Shikhare. Aamir himself was previously married to Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, both Hindus.
