Pritam is composing additional song for Abhishek’s character in Dum Maaro Dum

Abhishek's strong sullen silent and songless cop's character in Rohan Sippy's Dum Maaro Dum just got itself a song. And the music composer Pritam is working overnight to get the song ready.

Abhishek's character of the no-nonsense cop in Dum Maaro Dum is based entirely on his Pa the Big B's reticent no-nonsense cop's act in Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer. Says a source, "It was felt that Abhishek's character was getting too serious. It needed to be lightened up. So the director Rohan Sippy decided to shoot a song with Abhishek."

When contacted the film's music composer Pritam Chakraborty admits he has been asked to add a song for Abhishek in Dum Maaro Dum. "Abhishek won't be lip-syncing the track. But it will be his song. It will come on every time Abhishek comes on screen. The song will have the mellow subtle sober and soft, to go with Abhishek's subdued character."

Apparently, there was a big debate to decide if Abhishek's character should actually lip-sync the song. Says the source, "It was finally decided that making Abhishek's character sing would be out of character. So the song has been kept in the background for Abhishek's character."

Interestingly, in Zanjeer actors as varied as Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Shammi Kapoor had said no to the cop's role because he had no songs to sing in the film. The film's director Prakash Mehra and the writers refused to budge over the song issue. The Big B was the last choice for the role.

"But in Dum Maaro Dum, Abhishek was the first choice. And they didn't want to dilute his character in any way. At the same time it was felt the character needed a bit of music. That's why Pritam was urgently summoned to do Abhishek's song."
