Madhur goes back to school before Heroine

Always priding himself to be a school dropout and quite happy with the kind of success he has achieved despite no formal education, Madhur Bhandarkar has now
taken a U turn. He has opted to turn student for a change, this time around for a script writing course. Though he has forever claimed that he learnt story
telling from his experience as a video parlour owner and then later being an assistant director, Madhur jumped with joy when he was selected to participate
in a seminar cum a crash course hosted by Robert McKee, a world renowned master storyteller.

"Madhur went on a quick trip to New York last week to attend this seminar", confirms a friend of the filmmaker, "He had heard quite a few stories about
Robert McKee and once he found out that his name had been short listed, he kept aside time for it. Though there is a marked difference between Western
sensibilities and the kind of rooted cinema that he makes, Madhur feels that story telling is an art that has a universal language and doesn't come with any
boundaries."

While acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) is one of the many students of 70 year old Robert McKee, the veteran screen
writer McKee is also famous for his statement where he claimed that Casablanca (1942) was the greatest screenplay of all time. While for Madhur too
the statement pretty much holds true as Casablanca is one of his personal favourites, he also feels that there is enrichment in his thought process
after attending the seminar.

"Robert introduced a new structure of story telling to me", says Madhur who has himself won quite a few National Awards for himself, "Of course you can't
learn filmmaking in five days but then one of the basic criteria to attend this seminar is to have at least reasonable body of work behind you."

"On meeting Robert we did discuss a lot about how filmmaking is perceived in West and our own country. His fundamental was simple that one had to be
conscious of the narrative structure of a work and what goes in to make a story telling compelling. When a subject is of your interest area, you don't mind
sitting at the bench and turn into a student again", he quips.

With Madhur all set to kick-start Heroine next month, one now wonders how much of Western influence would be thrust upon Kareena Kapoor now and
whether she too would be willing to learn some lessons all over again.
