Udta Punjab

After the entire hullabaloo about the much talked about controversial film Udta Punjab, the latest update is that, the Censor Board has cleared it with 13 cuts under the 'A' category. This was declared by Censor Board's Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani yesterday in Bhopal. A Division Bench of the Bombay High Court is expected to pass the order in this case today.

Speaking about Udta Punjab's clearance, Pahlaj Nihalani said that nine members of the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) had seen Udta Punjab. After that, they, 'unanimously' cleared it after the proposed 13 cuts. Pahlaj Nihalani added, now that CBFC's job was over, it was upto Udta Punjab's producer to go to the court or tribunal. Post which, they (CBFC) would implement the order.

Readers may recall that, release of the Abhishek Chaubey directed Udta Punjab snowballed into a huge controversy, after it was refrained from being released by CBFC's Revising Committee, on the grounds of high voltage expletives in the film and the very usage of 'Punjab' in its title and removing a signboard mentioning 'Punjab', amongst the other changes. Post which, Phantom Films (the makers ofUdta Punjab) had approached the Bombay High Court against the Revising Committee's order that suggested changes in the film. Late last week, the High Court said that the makers of Udta Punjabshould tone down the expletive language and the vulgar scenes in the film to be toned down, since these two aspects alone cannot make a film work.

After the CBFC's clearance verdict, Udta Punjab is now being readied to release on June 17, 2016.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Diljit Dosanjh in the lead roles. The film deals with the problems of drug addiction amongst the youth in Punjab. If the buzz is to be believed, then, the total number of prints of Udta Punjab is likely to be raised.
