Seems like there is a rocky journey ahead for Aazaan en route to its next Friday release. Even though the film has seen it's promotion intensify during last couple of months and has been in news for over a year right through it's making, there are some political parties that have woken up to the supposedly 'volatile content' that the film carries. While there are questions being raised about the intent and content of the film, the first thing that has caught the attention of Samajwadi Party and MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) is the very title of the film.
"Azaan is a holy word but these parties have a doubt whether the film actually propagates peace or is instead a violent saga of global terrorism", says a source, "Since the film has a Muslim protagonist being the central character, the makers of Aazaan have also been questioned if this is yet another instance of a film where terrorism has been equated to minority community."
Shot across various continents, Aazaan marks the debut of Sachiin Joshi as a leading man in Bollywood. While he is also the producer here, Aazaan is directed by Prashant Chadha. When questioned about the accusations coming from the political parties and what did he plan to do about it, Sachiin said with obvious hurt in his voice, "I am surprised that without watching the film, some people now doubt the intentions of our film. Why don't they see the fact that the central protagonist here is propagating peace in the film and is fighting against global terrorism instead of being a part of it? "
However, protests just seem to be intensifying, what with posters of the film already been torn away in parts of Mumbai with further threats around disruption to the film if the title isn't changed immediately.
"It is tough to bow down to such demands, not just because they are unreasonable but also because it would be a logistical nightmare," sighs Sachiin. "The entire promotional material is already out across the country while prints are also ready to be dispatched. We are releasing the film in a major way overseas as well. Of course we can't make any changes now. If someone continues to have any problems, we are ready to sit down and talk it out. Beyond that, I can't and won't do anything."
