Bollywood is one place which is always open to any kind of permutations and combinations. Be it the casting in the films or even the selection of the film's titles, Bollywood has seen it all happen! This week's release goes by the name of SHAMITABH, which when decoded, is the combination of Dhanu'sh' and 'Amitabh', who also happen to be the lead stars in the film, which is directed by R. Balki. Does the film live up to the hype? Let's analyze. The film starts off with the star studded premiere of LIFEBUOY, the debut film of 'superstar' Daanish (Dhanush). And at the time of Q

Score 5/10 Director, writer Mr. R Balki work is good. Idea was very thin so it was very difficult to execute it and maintain the pace throughout but he succeeds keeping people entertained in most of the part and major contribution in it, is his amazing dialogues. Screenplay also offers something new. Film has very balanced and witty approach to make satire on Bollywood inside happenings and cracks laughter at many places by doing this. Background gives proper support to the film otherwise dull moments could have been more. Credit goes to Music director Ilyaraja, who has made the music different too. I couldn't get any strong reason that why should an AD go up to that level to support a person, whose case looks like impossible in first sight? I was also unable to understand the monologue in graveyard before interval. Film has very balanced pace before interval but it slows down just before and moves on jerky pace in second half. Climax is lengthy with extra dose of melodrama. Why they use graveyard in place of crematorium, I was unable to get, might be some filmy liberty to make the scene more impactful but I didn't get that feelings. Performance wise Amitabh Bachchan is superb. It is just a privilege to watch him acting on screen. Dhanush is also brilliant. It was practically difficult to justify another so popular voice but he did it in perfect way. Akshara Hasan has limited scope but she shines brightly in every intense scene. Actor, who played the landlord of a shanty in graveyard, is very good.

Daanish (dhanush) is an aspiring hero who comes to Mumbai but he is born dumb. His passion drives him to different places only to get kicked out but one assistant director Akshara (akshara) spots Daanish's perseverance and tries to help him. She goes in search of the perfect voice for Daanish and finds Amitabh Sinha (amitabh) a drunkard. The voice works and Daanish becomes a superstar naming himself as Shamitabh. But trouble occurs due to the ego conflict between Daanish and Amitabh. What happens from there forms the rest. The director has come up with an unusual storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was okay in parts. The dialogues were well written. The script was niche and the screenplay was not upto the mark. The background score was melodious and three songs were worth listening. Cinematography was the main strength to this film. Editing okay but needed during the second half. Costumes were well designed to suit the backdrop while the art department was impressive. Amitabh Bachchan was excellent once again and proved his mettle in all departments. Dhanush was amazing and matched AB throughout the film. Akshara looks dazzling and she made a confident debut. The other celebrities who made their cameo didn't offer much but the one to watch out for is Rekha. The filmmaker has always been known for his innovative concepts and this time he has worked on something like that. The first half in the beginning the film starts off well and was quite engaging with the introduction of characters and the intensity. But soon the film becomes a little unconvincing the scenes seem to be too convenient. While the film on paper might have sounded brilliant, the film is a little unbelievable. The interval bang was promising but things begin to dwindle, and the climax was good. One excepted more from a director like R Balki who has created brilliant films like Paa and Cheeni Kum. One sees flashes of brilliance in Shamitabh, but overall more of a spark was needed. Overall two actors save the film Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush who give performances which are par excellence, watch the film for them, and the high concept.

One thing that helps Shamitabh in making it a decent watch is a new story line. The concept itself is not yet tried in Bollywood. The trailer pretty much speaks about the story yet watching it unfolding on screen can be interesting. The second great thing about Shamitabh is the performances of Amitabh and Dhanush. Dhanush just nails it again and manages to get noticed even when he shares the frame with Indian legend Amitabh Bachchan. Kudos! On the flip side you might have wanted the screenplay of the movie to be more tight as there are few dull moments in the movie which at times hamper the narrative. Nevertheless, Shamitabh is a one time watch owing to fresh new story and decent performances by its lead protagonists

I must accept that Balki is a master director. The audacity with which Balki has given homage to Bachchan baritone is spellbinding. It is not just a tribute to Bachchan baritone but also an awe-inspiring ode to perishability of a man's life. In his third directorial venture, Balki takes the voice of Mr. Bachchan and puts it on Dhanush. Got gooseflesh? Yes, it is a daring attempt. Surprisingly, Balki flourishes in this attempt. Shamitabh revolves around three characters primarily: an actor Danish, a voice lender Amitabh and a bubbly assistant director Akshara. A big wow then to Amitabh Bachchan, the film's marvelous pivot. We shouldn't be surprised by anymore Bachchanism, but the man -- currently, constantly pushing himself onto a limb, decidedly making 2015 his own -- is an indisputable rockstar. Dhanush proves his supremacy yet again. The actor is natural all through, but his performance in the finale makes the character all the more believable. Akshara is such a revelation. She stands on her feet despite a formidable co-star's domineering presence. Director Balki shows a flair for light entertainers and the execution of certain sequences is commendable. Cinematography is splendid. Ilaiyaraaja's musical score is soothing. The title track is soft on your ear drums. Editing could've been sharper. Ideally, a few repetitive moments can be done away with. Shamitabh isn't a groundbreaking film, but it didn't set out to be?! Overall, it's a maturely written film with great characters, tremendous performances and some fantastic moments.
