Reality based movies are becoming the fancy of most directors in the multiplex era. Debutant director Zoya Akhtar is no different. Holding a mirror to some of the lesser known aspects of the Bollywood film industry, “Luck By Chance†produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, is the debut film of Zoya Akhtar. The movie boasts of many biggies from the Bollywood film industry making special appearances adding an extra touch of reality to the film, not to mention star value. Luck By Chance features Farhan Akhtar of “Rock On†fame, the very talented Konkona Sen Sharma and Isha Sharwani in key roles along with Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Kapoor in supporting roles. The biggest attraction of the film though is Hrithik Roshan who has an extended guest appearance in the film. With a unique story line, a talented star cast and many a special appearances, Luck By Chance is high on expectations. But will Zoya manage to give the right bite of reality? Before we go ahead into analysing the movie, lets take a look at the story. Luck By Chance revolves mainly around two struggling actors, Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) and Sona (Konkona Sen Sharma) who aim to make it big in Bollywood. While Vikram joins acting classes and takes horse-riding and dancing lessons to add to his profile, Sona plays supporting roles in movies with big banners. Just as predicted, they both get to taste the bitterness behind the ever so dreamy film industry. This lays the foundation of a growing friendship between the two, which soon turns into a love affair. When Sona’s aspiration breaks down by false promises made by a producer, luck shines on Vikram and he gets short-listed to play the male lead as the top star Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan) opts out of a big film at the last minute. Does Vikram manage to bag the role and survive in an industry that is so complex and contradicting? What takes to be a part of such a manipulative industry? Although Bollywood is the backdrop of Luck By Chance, it just spoofs the functioning of the industry without getting too hard-hittingly serious. The movie is an insiders view of how the industry works interweaving a lot of moments that is generally hidden by the shine of stardom. What works best in this movie is that, most situations that appear so simple and straight talk volumes for the movie. Like, the producer Rommy Rolly shedding tears in private as his films lead star Zaffar Khan fails to return his calls although he is the man behind his stardom. Also when another producer who promised a big break for Konkona outrightly denies to cast her because of having acted in side roles in many other films, although they were accepted only after his approval. Vikram making a study of yesteryear actress Neena by watching most of her movies in attempts to impress and lure her into being supportive for his debut movie alongside her daughter Nikki. Without getting very complex, Luck by Chance takes you on a clear and convincing journey from struggle to success to corruption to redemption. Zoya Akhtar deftly manages to pull off satire on the industry as well as several actors at their own expense but with dignity for all. With a taut screenplay and definitive moments, Zoya brings out both the good and the bad in the industry and its members. Unlike many other directors, Zoya calls for special apperance in the movie by lead stars not for star value but to go in sync with the script. The climax is something totally unexpected yet very apt. Taking the focus from Vikram’s success to Sona’s confidence and aim still alive in her in a different form, Zoya brings out the value of talent that makes a person and not luck. She also makes you feel the importance of having the courage and strength to move on in life. She is definitely a director to watch out for in the days to come. Dialogues by Javed Akhtar are brilliant. His sharp wit and sensitivity just adds to the grace of the movie. He makes the right remarks for the right situations like the one about Dimple Kapadia, ‘She’s a crocodile in a chiffon sari’. Music by trio Shanker-Ehsaan-Loy is excellent. ‘Sapno Se Bhare Naina’ and ‘Yeh Zindagi Bhi’ stand out in terms of lyrics while Baawre stands out for its beat, colorful costumes and beautiful choreogrphy. Zoya Akhtar has clearly managed to bring out the best in all the actors. Farhan Akhtar gets under the skin of his character of Vikram. He puts up a confident, strong and a very realistic performance. Konkona Sen undoubtedly was excellent, a very dependable actress. Isha Sharwani does what she is best at. She puts up a doll like look that calls for absolutely no acting. Rishi Kapoor as the punjabi man and bollywood producer was fantastic. Dimple Kapadia was good too. Hrithik Roshan in his extended cameo role is brilliant, one of the reasons for many to watch the film. Overall, Luck By Chance is a surpise package. It is a satirical take on the Bollywood industry without being very hard-hitting. The movie is worth a watch especially for Farhan – Konkana’s performance, Zoya’s direction and Hrithik Roshan!!

When a successor hones the talents and legacy of the master, it reflects on the creativity of the apprentice. Zoya Akhtar follows the legendary footsteps of her father and gives us a story so familiar, yet so unique and credible. Her directional debut with ‘Luck By Chance’ proves to be a writer and director’s accomplishment that is complemented by exemplary performances even though they may include numerous cameos. Farhan and Konkana embrace the characters of 2 struggling artists in the Hindi film industry with ease and subtlety. The film is about Vikram Jaisingh, a sincere young Delhiite whose dream is to make it to the big screen in Bollywood and a struggling ‘extra’, Sona Sharma who plays brief and meaningless roles in ‘B’ grade films while making compromises to even make it this far. This story is also about Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan) who is tired of playing the filmy hero for the same producer, Romy Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) over and over. He simply wants a break with Karan Johar’s upcoming movie. Khan’s apparent unwillingness to work with Rolly finally gives him the chance in Johar’s film while our struggler gets lucky by chance as the replacement. So begins the spoof on bollywood film making and the hypocrisy of the stars and starlets. While Vikram has just found his companion in Sona, the outdoor shoot for Rolly’s film brings him casually closer to Niki Walia (Isha Sherwani), the gorgeous daughter of the erstwhile glamour queen Neena Walia (Dimple). Relationships fail, strain and ignite in this film that apart from all stories that lie entangled is about realizing one’s dreams in an adverse reality. Then, when dreams turn into reality, one realizes that fame and success are a “dangerous intoxicationâ€, rightly advised by ShahRukh Khan. Luck By Chance is about the Hindi film industry and what makes it ‘Bollywood’ as we know it. The eccentric individuals, the stereotypical characters posing as experienced producers, veteran actors, unyielding directors, junior artists, hypocritical stars and the real gems in the industry. One has to get dirty to play in the mud and thus it brings success to some. While the chase to destiny tends to derail the dream train of even the earnest, it embraces those who endlessly strive toward it with a bit of Luck. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is pleasant and soulful with Javed Akhtar’s lyrics. The film opens with a glimpse into the industry with the meaningful and enriching Yeh Zindagi bhi and ends with the soulful O Raahi Re while Sapno se bhare naina portrays the turmoil within a dreamer. Sadly, Hrithik’s item song Bawre fails to leave a lasting impression. Konkana Sen performs at her brilliant best with realism being at the crux of her versatility. Isha Sherwani plays the spoilt heroine convincingly while her on-screen mother Dimple Kapadia looks gorgeous as ever and gives her best after Dil Chahta Hai. Juhi Chawla is loveable as ever while Sanjay Kapoor surprises us with a good performance. Rishi Kapoor enacts the stereotypical Sindhi producer to perfection with his wit and zest while Hrithik underplays his real persona to play Zaffar Khan, an actor in a career ambivalence of sorts. Farhan proves yet again that he can be an actor almost as good as he is a director. Almost…...there are parts where he is totally unconvincing, especially when he is romancing Isha in the lush green outdoors of the Konkan region. But his emotions are subtle in effect and dialogue delivery stronger than that in his own show on T.V. The rest of the supporting cast plays their parts aptly to the script’s demand while the cameos by the stars are for the first time, justified in purpose. Even though ShahRukh Khan or Karan Johar might have just a few lines to say, the impact lasts long enough. But the film’s biggest hero is Javed Akhtar. His exemplary writing, part in story and in dialogue is what makes the film remarkable. Zoya’s direction could not have done much without such a strong story and script even though it may not show the audience something they haven’t seen before. In the end, Luck By Chance wins hearts through its subtle story telling. Even though it may be a mocking tale of ‘Bollywood’, it never gets loud or exaggerated. While remaining very real, the story never turns into a Madhur Bhandarkar style ‘hard hitting’ real. Instead, the subtle rendering of the film world’s reality and an achiever’s journey through it leaves a lasting impact which will appease in the same manner even over a second watch. Luck By Chance shows typical Bollywood fare in an atypical manner and brings to the spotlight, Zoya Akhtar. - 8.74 on a scale of 1-10.

Farhaan BY Chance . Well, The title itself suggests that the Movie is all about Farhaan Akhtar’s brilliance, be it in the acting field or dancing around the trees. :d Farhaan has showed the world he can not only direct but dance(Hritik’s Birthday party ) and act (Luck By Chance) and Sing (Rock On). If this was not all he is rocking the television sets with his different yet convincing Hosting Style in “Oye !!! It’s Friday). He sure has the Brain of Einstein on his Head. He can surely give those who’s who of the Bollywood Stars like Bachchhans, Khans, and Roshans a run for their Money. Story and Screenplay : Zoya Akhtar didn’t have to much of the work so far as the Script is concerned coz the content is just another Struggler’s life saga who comes to Mumbai and makes the mark. Although she impressed with the Screenplay as this was the only tool with which she could grip the audience to their seats. Every now and then the guest appearances of the Well known celebrities of the bollywood keeps the flow of the movie alive. Direction : Zoya Akhtar has already proven her worth as an assistant director to Farhaan in lakshya and Dil Chahta Hai. Luck by Chance adds one more star in the sky of Zoya’s Potentially Long Career as a Director as Kismat Talkies is already under Production. She has brought out good performances from all the Other Actors besides Farhaan and Konkona. Cast and Performance : Farhaan as already mentioned gives yet another Superlative and perhaps more brilliant performance after and than Rock On. Man!! This Guy is a genius. Konkona Sen Sharma as always gives the signature par excellence performance as the lead heroine in the movie. Isha Sharwani looks good as newcomer in the Movie. Rishi Kapoor and Dimple also give soul to their characters as ever. Sanjay kapoor also justifies his character. All the Other actors in guest Appearance were also to the mark. Hritik’s character was strong but he didn’t play as was expected from him. Music : After a long time Shankar Ehsaan Loy disappoints their Fans with such a lame Music. They had fairly convenient script for their liberty to make Music but they were boringly forgettable. Sapno se Bhare Naina although is a catchy tune. Lyrics by Javed Akhtar could not do much as the Music did not back it up well. Just call the waiter and order your popcorns and go to the loo if you have during the Songs. Technicals : Other Technicals were not outstanding and not bad also. They were Okay . Choreography in the Hritik’s Song was Pathetic. Costumes were also Yuckkk…. I cant think of any reason why people make mistake when they have such a liberty to work ?.. Producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhaan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar has saved a lot of money I must say. :d But the performance of Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma takes the Movie to thw whole new level altogether. The Movie is not boring for sure if you watch the Movie with your brain on. ;) 3 Stars for this honest Effort. UD…

I usually don't write reviews of movies. However, I felt compelled to write about this particular movie, since it was more than a film set at the backdrop of behind-the-scenes action and drama of the Hindi film Industry. It is a rather interesting as well as refreshing take on the struggle and hard work that actors endure to get a break and carve a niche for themselves in the Industry. It also reflects on different interesting aspects of the actors, directors, producers, and all others associated with the Industry today. The reason why this film shines primarily is because of the foolproof and brilliant script, as well as its deft and brilliant execution and direction by Zoya Akhtar.Hats off to Zoya Akhtar for attempting a different but interesting story, bringing a brilliant script to life. Those who do not appreciate good cinema, which tells a different story, with a strong message, will find it boring or slow, as it does not present the typical dance-song routine, romance, melodrama trend. Dialogues by Javed Akhtar saab are powerful and straight out of life, which is why they register such a strong impact, as one can easily identify with them. Coming to the top-notch and brilliant performances of the actors. Shahrukh Khan is awe inspiring and leaves a strong impact. His charisma and charm radiates and resonates his screen persona, which is why he is one of the top actors of the Industry today. Aamir Khan doesn't get much screen time, which may be the only thing I felt was lacking. He is a fantastic and another top actor, who's sincerity and dedication knows no bounds, wish there was more of him in the film. Rishi Kapoor is marvelous. Dimple Kapadia is great. Hrithik Roshan is natural and played his part wonderfully. Coming to the most terrific acting displayed by Farhan Akhtar. He is brilliant, and is evolving into a fine actor. Konkona Sen Sharma, is remarkable, and has in my honest opinion, delivered an award-worthy performance. I can without a shred of doubt, go as far to even say that if there were an Indian Oscars award, she would definitely win it.
