Everyone must ride the Chennai Express. What is the formula for success in Bollywood? I don't think anyone has the answer to that. The biggest hit of all time is an intelligent comedy with the right amount of emotional drama about 3 college friends. In the Top 5 hits of all time you also have a spy thriller, a DDLJ inspired love story, and two nonsensical action flicks that appeal to the masses. Diverse enough? Enter Chennai Express. A movie that is on its way to shattering all box office records set by a Bollywood flick. Highest collections from preview shows. Highest ever first day, second day, and third day collections in India. Highest collections on opening day and opening weekend in International markets. Fastest to collections of 100 Crores. That is more than half a dozen records broken within 5 days of its release; records previously held by the two highest grossing Bollywood movies of all time - 3 Idiots and Ek Tha Tiger. Will SRK topple Aamir Khan and Salman Khan from the top two spots? It is anybody's guess as to how big a hit Chennai Express will eventually be, but one can imagine that it will continue to remain strong for the next 3 days, till OUATIM Dobara hits the screens. Following that collections may take a dip but one can expect it to continue running with average success during the next week based on the entertainment quotient. So was all this expected? Ofcourse it was. Its a Rohit Shetty film. Rohit Shetty has given more 100 crore hits than any other director in the industry. Its an SRK film. SRK is arguably the largest star in India and definitely the largest Indian star in international markets. It is a Deepika Padukone film. Deepika, following the success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, is one of the most popular actresses in B-Town. With the three coming together, the public was bound to flock to the cinemas. The collections were bound to be as high as they are. Especially with shows during the Eid holidays. The release strategy by UTV and Red Chillies has also played its part in ensuring the record breaking spree of Chennai Express. The movie has had the widest release ever for a Bollywood movie in India, as well as, in international markets. It had a simultaneous release in markets like Germany, France, and Peru where the marketing of the movie was tailored to local audiences. With SRK at the helm, one can expect nothing less. While Aamir Khan is an ace actor and Salman Khan an ace charmer, SRK is an ace marketeer and his strategies leave everyone behind. Lets come to the movie itself. Story? Acting? Execution? Some critics have panned it, but who cares really. Chennai Express is a full on bollywood entertainer. Right from the first hour on the train, to the second hour running around villages in the South, Chennai Express offers humor in generous amounts. While SRK may not be able to pull off such roles in the same vein as a Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, or Ajay Devgan, his screen presence is magnanimous. Mind you, SRK is in form; not the Rahul/Raj type form but the kind you saw in Yes Boss, Duplicate, and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Like any Rohit Shetty movie, there is ample action as well. The action sequence in the climax is super and takes you back to the 1980s where audiences loved seeing the hero beat up the bad guy despite being the underdog. Leave aside SRK, Rohit Shetty, an Deepika for the moment. If you are a Bollywood fan, do not miss this one. Chennai Express will be an entertaining and unforgettable 2.5 hour ride.
