With Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir Khan delivers his second consecutive flop; a first in the past 22 years

The Advait Chandan directorial Laal Singh Chaddha starring Aamir Khan hit screens earlier this month on August 11. Touted to be the next big money-spinner the film came with immense hopes. However, contrary to expectations and predictions, Laal Singh Chaddha has been a disaster at the box office. After opening on an underwhelming note, the business of the film did not see much recovery over its opening weekend and first week.

Now on its second weekend, the business of Laal Singh Chaddha has continued to remain low. Looking back at Aamir’s career, the actor whose last two releases viz. Laal Singh Chaddha and Thugs of Hindostan failed at the box office had seen a similar situation nearly 22 years ago with his release 1947 Earth and Mela facing a similar fate at the box office.

 

While 1947 Earth and Mela, which hit screens in September 1999 and January 2000 managed to draw in Rs. 3.80 cr, and Rs. 15.19 cr. respectively, prior to these two releases, Aamir had faced a similar box office fate with Baazi and Aatank Hi Aatank. Both, Baazi and Aatank Hi Aatank hit screens in 1995 and drew in Rs. 5.09 cr. and Rs. 2.55 cr. respectively. Now, with his more recent underperformers Thugs of Hindostan (November 2018) and Laal Singh Chaddha collecting Rs. 151.19 cr, and Rs. 55.53 cr. respectively, it seems like history is repeating itself.

 

However, in both cases, Aamir followed up the box office underperforms with a string of hits. Raising the question whether the actor’s career will head in the same direction.
