Kiran Rao speaks about her divorce process with Aamir Khan; says, “We had done it in a very slow and measured way”

Kiran Rao’s recent release, Laapataa Ladies, was highly received by both audience and critics. Her ex-husband Aamir Khan produced the film. In a latest interview, the filmmaker discussed how she and Aamir Khan dealt their divorce.

She stated, “Aamir’s and my kind of separation and divorce, we had done it in a very slow and a measured way.”  She also said that two of them were “very sure” that they wanted to change the status of their relationship and that they were “very conscious” of how they would proceed with their separation so that it could not come as a surprise to their son Azad and have a negative impact to their family.

 

Kiran Rao also revealed that she and Aamir Khan were very cognizant of the timing of their divorce and the steps they would take to ensure that everything went smoothly for everyone concerned. She stated that it was a “very thought-through” decision and that “nothing happened overnight.”

 

For those who are unaware, Kiran worked as an assistant director on the film Lagaan, which starred Aamir. They started dating in 2004 and got married in 2005. The couple became parents in 2011 when they welcomed their son Azad through surrogacy. Kiran and Aamir split ways in 2021.
