Jaya Bachchan labels marriage ‘outdated’ and doesn’t want Navya Nanda to get married: “Delhi ka laddoo he khao toh mushkil, na khao toh bhi mushkil”

Jaya Bachchan has sparked conversation yet again this time by commenting on marriage for her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda. Speaking at We the Women event, Jaya said she believes marriage has become “an outdated institution” and made it clear she doesn’t want Navya to get married.

During the discussion, she said plainly: “I don’t want Navya to get married.” When asked whether she thought marriage was outdated, she replied, “Yes, absolutely. I am a grandmother now. Navya turns 28 in a few days. I am too old to advise young girls on how to bring up children. Things have changed so much and today little children are so smart, they will outsmart you."

 

Jaya also emphasized that a legal marriage is not necessary for a meaningful relationship. She used a metaphor many found striking: describing marriage as “Delhi ka laddoo he khao toh mushkil na khao toh bhi mushkil. But just enjoy life!”

 

For context: Navya is the niece of actor Abhishek Bachchan. Her father is industrialist Nikhil Nanda a cousin of actors Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor on his mother Ritu Nanda’s side.

 

With this stance, Jaya appears to challenge traditional norms around marriage and relationships. Her remarks reflect a more modern view: that emotional connection and personal choice matter more than societal expectations — and that happiness doesn’t necessarily need to be legitimized by a wedding.
