Dia Mirza was recently seen in Anubhav Sinha’s Bheed. The film looked back at the period of the first COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020. The actress’s next venture is uniquely titled Dhak Dhak, which has an ensemble cast of Ratna Pathak Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanjana Sanghi, apart from herself.

Throwing some light on the film’s subject, Dia told Bollywood Hungama, “It’s the story of four women who journey from Delhi to Khardung La (mountain pass in Ladakh) on motorcycles.”

Dia added that she enjoyed working with an all-women cast. “It was great fun,” she said. “I loved working with all of them; discovering each of them. Just making friends and forming sisterhood with them. I love Ratna Pathak Shah ma’am. I learnt so much from her every day.”

Shooting a film based on a voyage is not easy. But Dia also faced additional challenges. “It wasn’t an easy film to shoot,” she said. “We started filming in Delhi when it was 50 degrees centigrade. It was really tough, especially for me because I was in a burkha and hijab and riding a bike with a helmet. It was daunting.”

Dhak Dhak is produced by Taapsee Pannu and Pranjal Khandhdiya under their banner Outsiders Films along with Viacom18 Studios. Dia is all praise for her producers for backing this story. “I think it’s very brave and incredible for Taapsee and Pranjal to have chosen to tell this story and to have brought us together and given us this once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is brave enough to make a film about four women and make it only their story; it’s very powerful and very empowering.”

Dia is pleasantly surprised to be getting to play meaty roles at this stage of her career. “As a woman, I don’t think I would have ever thought that I will get some of the best parts to play of my life after I hit 40. When you are younger, you are made to believe that you have a short life. There is always this clock ticking,” she said.

Dhak Dhak is directed by Tarun Dudeja and the film is all set to release this year in theatres.
