EXCLUSIVE: Azeem Dayani explains everything about music supervision; says the idea was to regularise this profession 

Be it the film industry or the music industry, the opportunities for a talented artist are endless. Speaking of the music industry, in the last few years, a bunch of singers have released their singles besides singing for Bollywood films. In this growing industry, the term, music supervisor, has lately received a lot of attention. To understand the depth of the same, Bollywood Hungama recently interviewed Azeem Dayani, India’s first music supervisor.

 

EXCLUSIVE: Azeem Dayani explains everything about music supervision; says the idea was to regularise this profession 

 

When asked to shed some light on the importance and role of a music supervisor, Azeem explained, “I think music supervising is a relatively new concept. It is about the packaging, which includes the singer, composer and identifying the right blend of a team. It’s about finding the right team member, and identifying which lyricist or singer would be a perfect fit. One person alone cannot create an album; there are multiple professionals required like composer, lyricist and singer.”

 

He further added, “So, the idea of raising awareness of it is to let people know that this industry needs fresh talent. So we collaborated with Tanishk Bagchi, Jasleen Royal and Amaal Malik in Dharma Productions. So having this kind of diverse profiling gives an opportunity to fresh faces, because the more people come into the industry the more energy they get. Having said that, music supervision can be summed up in three words it is - identify new talent, create a fresh team, and find the right combination.”

 

As the conversation progressed further, Azeem also opened up on the biggest challenge of being a music supervisor. He said, “The most challenging part of my journey was making people believe that music supervision could be a profession. The idea was nothing more than giving one hit song to prove that music supervision could be regularised in this industry. I started in 2016 and it’s 2023 now, 7 years down the line, I have seen the industry accepting it and there are a lot of music supervisors today. So it is a proud moment for me.”
