Chitrangada Singh addresses objectification debate around Housefull 5, calls for context in comedy: "Comedy is about execution"

By Bollywood Hungama News Network -

Actor Chitrangada Singh recently addressed the criticism surrounding Housefull 5, which faced backlash for allegedly objectifying women under the guise of comedy. In an interview with News18, the actor shared her perspective, noting that audience reactions often depend on how a film’s content is executed. She also drew a comparison with Dhurandhar to explain her point.

Chitrangada said actors usually have limited control over the way scenes are ultimately presented on screen and pointed out that the Housefull franchise had always followed a specific style of broad, physical comedy. She acknowledged that humour involving women could sometimes feel uncomfortable but stressed that such comedy was largely judged by its execution.

According to her, physical comedy tended to draw criticism when it failed to resonate, while similar humour was widely accepted when it worked. She added that comparable forms of comedy had existed in international cinema and older films for years and were embraced by audiences when presented effectively.

Referring to Dhurandhar, which was criticised by some for its depiction of violence, Chitrangada said, “Sometimes when a film like Dhurandhar comes, some people may only look at it as a film with violent scenes, but that’s the storytelling. In the same way, you have certain kinds of comedy films, and that’s their storytelling. This is how a physical comedy is played out, and this is how a director wants to show it.”

When asked about her personal views on films like Housefull 5, she said, “I don’t judge it. It’s up to the audience and their discretion to watch or not watch or agree or not agree with it. But do I as an actor, feel comfortable watching something like that? Maybe not. I would prefer if certain scenes could have been done in a different way. But sometimes, I won’t say moralistic, but we get slightly over-judgmental. But you got to take it in the right vein and give it certain cinematic allowance.”
