20 Years of Bluffmaster EXCLUSIVE: Rohan Sippy explains why the sequel is a NIGHTMARE to crack: “The first film worked because viewers were conned…you can’t con a prepared audience!”

Bluffmaster (2005), the cool con-comedy, completed 20 years on December 16. The film was loved for its fresh treatment, casting, comic moments, the chartbuster music and of course, the shocking suspense. Those were the days when films with twists were not common. Hence, no one could see it coming and added to the film’s popularity. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, director Rohan Sippy spoke about the climax.

When asked if anyone ever told him that they were able to predict the suspense beforehand, Rohan Sippy replied, “No, I don’t recall that. Also, before social media, you could keep secrets! This twist was a major attraction for me as a filmmaker. This is not a plot driven story because this final twist turns out to be that of the love story. It’s the story of a woman who didn’t give up on her man and who proved the point that money is not as important as love. The goings-on of the film changed Abhishek Bachchan’s heart and it was a massive con played on him. There was a satisfaction of not just having a twist but adding more meaning to the film. Moreover, it left viewers with a smile on their faces. We satisfied them without making the film too cheesy.”

 

Rohan Sippy, however, agreed that an ending of this sort was a risk. He said, “With these films, if you go wrong by 2%, it can backfire. Luckily, everything stayed right on the edge. I have been a part of films where it doesn’t happen. So, you know how it's fortunate you are!”

 

Abhishek Bachchan has often expressed the desire that Bluffmaster 2 should be made. Rohan Sippy explained why it’s a challenge to make a second part, “If we find an apt story, nothing will stop us. But its ten times harder for us because what viewers liked about the first film is that they were conned. Now, if you go into a film thinking you’re going to be conned, it’s impossible to con you! When people are looking for it, it’s not as fun. In a franchise like Munna Bhai or some other film, the character is the driving force and it doesn’t depend on any twist for you to buy into it. But with Bluffmaster, along with the characters, it’s not just pulling off a con but conning the audience as well. So, it’s not a simple thing.”

 

While signing off, Rohan Sippy assured, “But if and when we crack the script, I’d love to take it on the floors.”
