Second weekend is crucial
Enough about how KAMINEY and LIFE PARTNER couldn't, unfortunately, capitalize on a 3-day glorious weekend. Glorious, because Friday was Janmashthami, Saturday was Independence Day and of course, Sunday. Non-stop holidays. The harm's done. Let's not cry over spilt milk anymore.
Second weekend is crucial
Instead, let's talk about the quantum of money UTV and Studio 18 lost in the process. Let me tell you that Mumbai-Thane and Pune yield big revenue and the distributors were, expectedly, excited that they would generate tremendous business due to the holiday period. But…
UTV [KAMINEY] has lost approx. Rs. 5 crores, while Studio 18 [LIFE PARTNER] has lost approx. Rs. 2 crores. Sure, theatres in Mumbai re-opened on Monday and the ticket sales, of KAMINEY specifically, were very brisk. But the revenue generated on a weekend cannot be compared to that of a weekday.
Elsewhere, LIFE PARTNER showed vast improvement over its Friday figures in Gujarat, C.P., C.I. and Rajasthan, while KAMINEY performed best in Delhi-U.P., Punjab and South. UTV seems optimistic of KAMINEY and have retained the same screens in its second weekend. Let's see if the film maintains its pace in its second weekend. LIFE PARTNER, on the other hand, will have to show an upward trend if it has to reach the safety mark. An upswing in a few circuits wouldn't really help.
KAMINEY has benefitted Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor tremendously. Vishal's movies have had a dull run at the box-office and the terrific start of KAMINEY has indeed come as a respite for this supremely talented film-maker.
Shahid Kapoor's rankings have also taken a leap. He's right there - at the top, hobnobbing with the crème de la crème of powerful actors who call the shots on Fridays. His next release, DIL BOLE HADIPPA, should only cement his status further.
