Domestic B.O.: Well done Sid!

 

The excitement has begun. With a variety of movies releasing in rapid succession, you can't help but look forward to every Friday with super-enthusiasm. The festival of lights is around the corner and one only hopes that the turnover only escalates before this calendar year comes to a close. It's time the balance sheet looked healthier!

Domestic B.O.: Well done Sid!

 

The one thing that makes me jump with joy is the variety of genres being attempted these days. It's a phase that would herald the birth of newer talents, who, in turn, are sure to narrate stories hitherto untold on the Hindi screen earlier.

 

The process has begun… Last week, I was pleasantly surprised with Ayan Mukerji's directorial debut WAKE UP SID. He could've made a stereotypical love story. He didn't. He could've opted for the biggest of stars. Instead, he opted for actors. Ayan had the backing of one of the biggest production houses of the country. But he had the courage to swim against the tide. Also, Karan Johar deserves lavish praises for agreeing to back the project as soon as Ayan completed the script narration.

 

In terms of economics, WAKE UP SID falls into the medium range category and was, therefore, sold at a nominal price. In turn, its distributors, UTV, released the film with a limited print count, targeting its core audience - multiplex junta. The urban youth has embraced the film, which is evident with the opening weekend numbers. There has been a decline in business from Monday onwards, but the fall isn't drastic. I expect the numbers to hold well in the second weekend as well.

 

DO KNOT DISTURB, unfortunately, was bogged down with extremely mixed reports from Day 1. The problem is, the viewers are comparing it to David Dhawan's previous laughathons and that has gone against the film. The business slided downwards on Saturday, while Monday witnessed a big fall at several screens. Will it stand a chance in the forthcoming weekend? Or will ACID FACTORY take away that audience?
