Rupert Everett unveils MTV AIDS awareness campaign

1st December 2006 saw the launch of a week-long AIDS Awareness campaign, initiated by MTV. Famous Hollywood actor Rupert Everett has come down to India for the launch. Rupert Everett has acted in romantic Hollywood flicks like My Best Friends Wedding, The Next Best Thing and Shakespeare in Love. Being a gay icon himself, he feels strongly about the Aids issue. On World Aids Day, Everett, along with MTV VJ Sophie Chowdhary, introduced the campaigns amiable mascot Rubber Sing. The animated Rubber Sing is meant to edu-tain the young masses-educate as well as entertain. He said on Friday that the main purpose of Hollywood personalities coming down to India to talk about Aids is to create mass impact. He stressed that Parmeshwar Godrej does not create as much impact on the youth as an Elizabeth Taylor would. On a serious note, he also affirmed that Aids is a global issue which puts all the nations in the world on the same pedestal. He said that India needs to change its outlook, fight conservatism, and talk about this issue more openly. The self confessed gay actor strongly believes that Aids is an issue that can erase differences and bring humanity together.
