Karisma Kapoor is earning praise for her performance in Brown, the recently released Hindi ZEE5 crime thriller that has intrigued audiences with its dark narrative, gripping mystery and unconventional protagonist. Directed by Abhinay Deo, the series follows Rita Brown, a brilliant detective battling personal demons while navigating complex investigations.
At the heart of the series is Karisma Kapoor’s transformative portrayal of Rita Brown, a character far removed from the polished and glamorous screen image the actress has been associated with throughout her career. To bring authenticity to the role, Karisma immersed herself in the character’s world, embracing Rita’s flaws, vulnerabilities and emotional turmoil.
Brown presents Rita as a deeply troubled investigator whose personal struggles are as compelling as the mysteries she attempts to solve. The series has been garnering attention for its gritty tone and character-driven storytelling, with Karisma’s performance emerging as one of its biggest talking points.
Speaking about her transformation for the role, Karisma shared how stepping into Rita Brown’s shoes challenged her as an actor and allowed her to explore unfamiliar territory. The actress opened up saying, “Well, I think Rita Brown is everything I am not. She is an alcoholic, she is a smoker, she is a pill popper. She is grungy, she is completely broken. To be so raw on screen, and to let yourself go to that extent was very exciting and a big challenge for me.”
“I enjoyed every single minute of this process and there was a method to the madness. Abhinay was so detailed with the nuances that Rita Brown has. Apart from this, there are so many small things that she does. She is constantly sipping on her cup. When she goes into investigation, she will re-tie her hair, these are small things you don't even realise. It is so exciting for an actor, when you need to incorporate these tiny things as well. So definitely I think it has been an exceptional experience as an actor for me to go through this process,” she added.
Karisma also credited director Abhinay Deo for helping shape the character through carefully crafted details and mannerisms that added depth to Rita’s personality. From her physical habits to her psychological complexities, every aspect of the character was designed to reflect a woman struggling to keep herself together while pursuing justice.
