Actor Suvansh Dhar says taking on a gay character in Campus Beats Season 6 came with a sense of responsibility rather than hesitation. The actor has been receiving appreciation from viewers for his performance in the latest season of the popular show.
Speaking about whether he had doubts before accepting the role, Suvansh said acting requires performers to step into different kinds of characters. “See, it's a job of an actor to do everything. So, there was no hesitation at all.” He added that his main concern was ensuring the portrayal felt honest and respectful. “I was just scared that I might not do the depiction honestly. But I tried.”
To prepare for the role, Suvansh said he looked beyond the script and spoke with people from the LGBTQ+ community to better understand their experiences. “I even spoke to my friends who are from the community, understood what all they have gone through, what all problems they have faced, what all struggles they still face.” The actor described the experience as meaningful, especially because it was something new for him as a performer. “It was beautiful for me to play something like that because I have not played anything like this yet.”
Suvansh also acknowledged that such roles need to be handled carefully because representation matters to many viewers. “I know people are very sensitive towards such characters, so that was the main hesitation… I didn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings.” He said his aim was to approach the role sincerely and do justice to the character.
On audience reaction, Suvansh feels viewers may take time to connect with the new addition to the series, especially since earlier characters already have an established fan base. “My character is introduced in Campus Beats 6, and previous characters already have a fanbase. As I joined the show this season, I've brought fresh air.”
The actor also revealed that he has received encouraging messages, particularly from members of the LGBTQ+ community. “I've been getting some messages from the community, and they're thanking me for portraying this character in a beautiful way.” For Suvansh, the most meaningful reward is when audiences form an emotional connection with the character. “For me, a big win is when somebody is able to emotionally connect with my role.”
