Dhurandhar The Revenge has become a record-earner not just in India but also overseas. As of Friday, April 24, the Ranveer Singh-starrer has grossed Rs. 1824.94 crores worldwide. It is now the second-highest Hindi grosser of all time and stands only behind the Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal (2016). The latter earned a historic USD 196 million [Rs. 1259 crores as per the dollar rate then] from China alone. As a result, despite Dhurandhar The Revenge achieving record-breaking numbers, it won’t surpass Dangal’s worldwide box office total, which stands tall at Rs. 1968.03 crores.

If one considers the collections of Dhurandhar The Revenge until April 24, the total is only around Rs. 143 crores short of Dangal’s numbers. By the time the former ends its run, it’ll probably fall short by just Rs. 100-110 crores. Interestingly, Dhurandhar The Revenge didn’t get a release in the Gulf countries. A section of the trade believes that had it been released in the UAE-GCC belt, it may well have covered the difference and challenged, or even broken, Dangal’s legendary record.
The trade experts also noted that Dhurandhar The Revenge managed to cross the Rs. 1800 crore mark worldwide without earning from two key markets – the Gulf and China – which also makes its performance significant. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “A lot of people have been saying that Dangal holds the record. However, a major contribution of that film came from China as well as the UAE-GCC belt. Hence, for me, Dhurandhar The Revenge is a far bigger success story than Dangal, as it has collected so much without two major markets. I really don’t know how the response in China would be, if at all, it releases there. But I am confident that in the UAE-GCC, it would have been a huge grosser.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan stated, “A major contribution for Dangal has come from China. I guess 85-90% of the overseas business was achieved from China.” When asked if Dhurandhar The Revenge would have crossed Dangal with Gulf release, he replied, “Yes, it would have easily crossed Dangal had it been released in the UAE-GCC.”
Suniel Wadhwa, Co-Founder & Director, Karmic Films, disagreed, “The loss of Dhurandhar The Revenge due to no release in the Gulf is Rs. 65-85 crores. So, even if the film had earned this amount, it would have still not crossed Dangal’s collections. Also, Dhurandhar will never release in China (and hence there’s no chance it can make up for the difference in the future).”
He also made a novel observation, “If you compare, part 1’s collections in Overseas were 28 million USD while part 2 has earned around 45 million USD. So, the growth is very good. But if you compare India, the growth is not that good.” He also added, “We also need to compare only Hindi versions of both parts as part 1 was not dubbed in any language, unlike part 2.”
Girish Johar, producer and eminent film business analyst, refused to draw parallels, “Dangal managed to collect with China. Dhurandhar The Revenge hasn’t collected in China. So, it won’t be an apple-to-apple comparison.”
Taran Adarsh signed off by saying, “Look at the run of the film. The kind of impact it has had, I don’t think any film has had in recent times. It’s a new yardstick. Every forthcoming film will be compared to Dhurandhar The Revenge. It has left a lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the common man and it’s difficult to erase it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event. Now, the responsibility is not just on filmmakers but also on the actors, director and producers involved with this film to deliver a similar kind of cinema in the future.”
