The upcoming period drama Ranabaali continues to generate attention as one of the anticipated releases of 2026. Starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, the film is set against the backdrop of 19th-century South India and draws inspiration from lesser-known real-life events. Backed by Mythri Movie Makers and directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the project aims to explore themes of resistance, tradition, and survival during the colonial era.
Speaking about the film’s foundation, Rahul Sankrityan highlighted the extensive research that went into shaping the narrative. “History exists in many forms - not just in books, but in the stories passed down in villages and rituals”, says director Rahul Sankrityan, sharing how he spoke to historians, poets, and went through archives for research.”
He further elaborated on the geographical and cultural context that inspired the story. He adds, "The Madras Presidency - present-day Chennai, Telugu regions, and Bengaluru - has its own untold stories of struggle and resilience. We rarely hear these in mainstream narratives." According to the director, some of the most impactful moments emerged from personal experiences, including a visit to his father’s village, where a long-forgotten ritual being revived later influenced the film’s climax.
Set in the Rayalaseema region, Ranabaali builds its narrative around real incidents from the 19th century. The film attempts to bring attention to stories that have largely remained outside mainstream historical discourse, while presenting them through a large-scale cinematic lens.
Rahul Sankrityan also reflected on the changing preferences of audiences. He shared, “For years, we kept revisiting the same familiar themes - love stories and family dramas. But today, audiences' tastes are evolving, and they want something more. Viewers are drawn to spectacle, grand fantasy epics and larger-than-life narratives rooted in history and mythology. It's simply a case of supply meeting demand. As a country, we're rediscovering our past and trying to understand what truly happened. That old sense of inferiority of constantly looking to the West for validation is slowly fading."
Discussing the lead character, the director described Vijay Deverakonda’s role as intense and layered. Rahul shared, "Vijay plays a man driven by deep anger, and his rage comes from the harsh realities of that region and time, where aggression was often necessary for survival. He portrays a fierce rebel from a royal lineage - a chieftain or landlord with commanding presence."
To prepare for the role, Deverakonda reportedly underwent extensive training, including mastering the old Rayalaseema dialect and learning horse riding over several months. The production team also sourced and trained horses to ensure authenticity in the film’s action sequences, with the director noting that the animal plays a significant role in the narrative.
The film also features international actor Arnold Vosloo as a British officer. Explaining the casting decision, Rahul Sankrityan said, "One of the boldest decisions I've made, and one I'm incredibly proud of - was casting Arnold as Sir Theodore Hector (the film's fictional British officer). From the first conversation, he was excited. A history enthusiast from South Africa — itself a former British colony - he connected deeply with the emotions in the script. It's an action-packer role, and working with Arnold was effort."
The director added that Vosloo also underwent linguistic training to adapt to the character, contributing to the film’s colonial backdrop.
Produced by Y. Ravi Shankar and Naveen Yerneni, Ranabaali is mounted on a large scale and also marks the on-screen reunion of Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 11, 2026.
