Actor Sayani Gupta is set to explore a new creative avenue as she makes her directorial debut with the short film Aasmani. In addition to directing, she has also written and produced the project, making it a deeply personal milestone in her artistic journey.
The film features veteran actor Revathi in the lead role, alongside newcomer Daria Bedi, who is being introduced through the project. With its focus on layered storytelling and character-driven narrative, Aasmani is positioned as an intimate exploration of relationships and individuality.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India, Sayani opened up about her long-standing aspiration to step behind the camera. “Making a film has been a 17 year long dream ever since I stepped foot into film school,” she said. “All these years, with every set I’ve been on as an actor, that desire has only grown stronger. In a world ridden with so much chaos and atrocity, cinema can truly act as a medium for discourse, resistance, evocation; and perhaps even a balm.”
Over the years, Sayani Gupta has built a diverse filmography, known for choosing unconventional and meaningful roles across projects like Margarita with a Straw, Four More Shots Please!, Article 15, Pagglait, Fan, Jolly LLB 2 and Axone. Sharing more about the film’s themes, she added, “Aasmani is a film about love, companionship and freedom with themes of redundancy, values and loss. It’s a story about these spunky women (of different age groups) who know their minds and worth. I hope for the film to be a spot of sunshine, love and joy for anyone who watches it.”
Aasmani is produced under Sayani Gupta Movies in collaboration with the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for Arts and One India Stories. The project is further supported by executive directors including Nikkhil Advani, Dia Mirza and Ananya Rane.
The short film also marks the first project from the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for Arts, while One India Stories presents it as their second release. Notably, the script has already garnered recognition at multiple international platforms, adding to the anticipation ahead of its world premiere.
With Aasmani, Sayani Gupta takes a significant step forward in her creative journey, transitioning from actor to filmmaker while continuing her focus on meaningful and nuanced storytelling.
