Kapoor & Sons (2016), produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and directed by Shakun Batra, completed 10 years on March 18. The family saga is fondly remembered for its music, treatment, subject, performances, as well as its dramatic confrontations and hilarious moments. A significant portion of the film was shot in the picturesque hill station of Coonoor. The palatial residence shown in the film is a boutique hotel named 180 McIver, which has since become a tourist destination after its release. Another location in the film that grabbed attention was the restobar where Rahul (Fawad Khan) and Tia (Alia Bhatt) have a gala time. Many moviegoers wondered whether this happening place actually existed in the Tamil Nadu hill station. Meanwhile, residents of Mumbai’s Shivaji Park were in for a surprise when they stepped out to watch Kapoor & Sons, as the restobar shown in the film is actually a local restaurant named Chinese Garden.

The Chinese Garden is a 41-year-old establishment renowned for its old-school Indo-Chinese retro decor and reasonably priced, delicious Chinese cuisine. However, unlike what is shown in Kapoor & Sons, it does not serve alcohol. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to one of the owners, Anil Pawar, about their experience of renting out the place to the makers of Kapoor & Sons.
Anil Pawar also confessed that many regular customers excitedly told him that they were proud to see Chinese Garden in all its glory on the big screen in Kapoor & Sons, “They were pleasantly surprised. The décor has a Goan feel and I guess it also looks like a drinking place. So, it was apt for the scene in the movie.” He also pointed out the dining area close to the billing counter and said, “This is where the dance sequence was shot.”

No other film has been shot at Chinese Garden after Kapoor & Sons. Anil Pawar explained the reason behind it, “We had to stop giving out our place for shoots as customers used to get inconvenienced a lot. The makers used to pay handsomely and would also compensate in case they altered or broke anything while shooting. But ours is a 40-year-old establishment and, for us, the customer comes first.”
He added, “Secondly, film units used to arrive with several cars, generators and three vanity vans. It used to cause traffic jams on Cadell Road.”
Anil Pawar then opened up about the Aatish experience, “That film was also shot for 2 days in our restaurant. Sanjay Dutt had come to our place for our shoot. He was so well built that I was stunned for a second!”

He then revealed, “After completing the shoot, he came here a few times and met us. We became friends. In fact, kisi ladki ka phone aata tha usko hamare landline pe! He had informed that girl that he was hanging out at Chinese Garden. He had told us, ‘If any girl asks for Sanjay, make sure you hand over the phone to me’. 2-3 times, that girl called. I didn’t ask who she was. That memory is etched in my mind. Then, Sanjay Dutt got into problems and we lost touch. But he was quite a fun guy.”
