Filmmaker Karan Johar has opened up about Shah Rukh Khan’s deep passion for his IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), describing it as a benchmark example of commitment translating into success in the Indian Premier League. He was speaking on Sarthak Ahuja’s podcast.
Speaking about what he termed the “OG partnership” in the league, Johar said, “Shah Rukh Khan and Kolkata Knight Riders was the first time there was a genuine, amazing master partnership. Shah Rukh Khan bought a cricket team when it started decades ago. Look at the valuation today. Why is it (so high)? It’s because Shah Rukh Khan is obsessed, passionate and sincerely active in his liaison with KKR.”
Johar highlighted that Khan’s association with the franchise goes far beyond celebrity endorsement. According to him, the team’s remarkable growth in valuation over the years is directly linked to the superstar’s personal involvement and sustained enthusiasm.
He further explained, “He is not just adding presence in the stadium or like giving his name to that partnership. It’s because he strategizes, engages, obsesses; he gives hours of his time to that liaison, to that partnership. That is why it is such a profitable venture for him. And that is why it’s probably bigger than any business in movies that he has engaged with. So, what are the success stories? When you are actually really passionate about what you are selling.”
Through these remarks, Johar underscored that true success stories emerge when passion meets participation — when a public figure does more than lend a name, and instead invests time, energy and strategic focus into what they build.
