Actor Arshad Warsi, widely recognised for his beloved role as Circuit in the Munna Bhai franchise, recently offered new insight into why the long-awaited sequel Munna Bhai Chale America was ultimately shelved, nearly two decades after it was first announced. In a conversation with The Lallantop, Warsi said the decision came down to the project’s similarity to an existing Shah Rukh Khan film, My Name Is Khan.
The Munna Bhai series — beginning with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and followed by Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) — became a cultural phenomenon in Indian cinema, blending humour with heart and social commentary. Over the years, fans have eagerly anticipated a third installment, widely teased as Munna Bhai Chale America.
According to Warsi, whose performance as Circuit played a pivotal role in the franchise’s success, Munna Bhai Chale America was dropped because its storyline closely mirrored that of a widely recognised Shah Rukh Khan film. “As far as I know, My Name Is Khan’s story turned out to be very similar to that of Munna Bhai Chale America,” Warsi said, referring to the 2010 drama in which Khan’s character travels abroad while navigating complex social themes. “In this movie too, we both (Munna Bhai and Circuit) were to meet the US president. Rajkumar Hirani does not like it when his work resembles other movies.”
Warsi’s comments shed light on the creative considerations of director Rajkumar Hirani, known for his meticulous storytelling. According to the actor, Hirani has been reluctant to pursue material that risks being perceived as derivative. Warsi pointed out that the director has even revised scripts in other projects — referencing how PK’s second half was rewritten multiple times after the release of Oh My God (2012) to maintain originality. “Upon learning about Oh My God, he rewrote PK’s second half three times,” Warsi recalled.
Despite the shelving of Munna Bhai Chale America, Warsi noted that Hirani still has three scripts ready for the third installment of the beloved franchise, and believes all of them are stronger than many contemporary films. “All of them are far better than most movies that make it to screens these days,” he said, suggesting the possibility of a future Munna Bhai sequel that avoids narrative overlap with existing films.
Warsi also shared anecdotes about his own career path, including how a tarot card reader convinced him to take on the role of Circuit in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., a part he initially considered declining.
Speaking of the professional front, Arshad had quite a busy schedule this year, with multiple releases and the shooting of his next, Welcome To The Jungle.
