What went wrong with Mastiii 4? Trade experts slam “vulgar jokes that don’t land” and ageing heroes in a ‘youth’ film

en Bollywood News What went wrong with Mastiii 4? Trade experts slam “vulgar jokes that don’t land” and ageing heroes in a ‘youth’ film

The adult comedy Mastiii 4, starring Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani, released on November 21. There was hope that a film in this zone would arrive after a long time and hence might click with its target audience. Sadly, it opened at just Rs. 2.25 crores and didn’t show growth over the weekend. Its lifetime earnings are expected to be less than Rs. 15 crores. Bollywood Hungama spoke to trade experts to understand what went wrong with the film.

What went wrong with Mastiii 4? Trade experts slam “vulgar jokes that don’t land” and ageing heroes in a ‘youth’ film

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh stated, “I haven’t watched Mastiii 4. But what I heard about the film is that the jokes did not land. Also, the jokes went vulgar. If you are watching a comic caper and the characters on screen are laughing, but if viewers are not laughing, then something is seriously wrong with the film.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “Mastiii 4 seemed outdated. If youngsters work in such films, then it's fine. When these actors worked in the first part of Masti (2004), they were perfect for the roles, as they were the right age and relatable. Now, they are in their late 40s; youngsters don’t have that connect with them, that too in a film like this. Also, those who are of the age of these actors won’t enjoy such films now.”

He also said, “The marketing wasn’t up to the mark. Moreover, the jokes seem outdated in the trailer. A film like this needed jokes and casting that work with Gen-Z.”

Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal explained, “I haven’t seen the film, but I have been told that there was a lot of vulgarity in dialogues. Such films don’t work in today’s times. If you look at the past several years, movies consisting of double meanings and vulgar dialogues haven’t made a mark at the box office. Most of the single screens, which used to play such films, have closed down. Multiplexes with high admission rates don't have an audience for such movies.”

Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director at film production and distribution firm Karmic Films, agreed, “There’s a fatigue in this genre as a lot of such content is available on OTT and social media platforms. So, it’s difficult for such films to work. Moreover, it is given an ‘A’ certificate, which takes away the family audience. It appeals only to the masses; the class audience shies away from it, too. Moreover, the music also wasn’t great. There has to be seen driving element to draw in the audience and that was missing in Mastiii 4.”

Atul Mohan, however, believed that an adult comedy can work in today’s times if made correctly, “The genre is never an issue; one needs to evolve. Masti, at that time, worked as the jokes were great and it was also rich in emotions and music. It had double-meaning jokes, but it wasn’t too vulgar and in tolerable limits.”

Taran Adarsh exulted, “In franchises and sequels, it’s important that one must constantly reinvent. Mastiii 4 should have done that. Content and writing are very important. It’s the backbone of any film. If it’s a franchise or comic, the jokes need to land. People need to enjoy them. At one point, there was an audience for the adult comedy. But I feel that even that factor is going down. It is targeted at the youth and if the youth doesn’t come, there’s a problem.”

At one point, franchises were a safe bet, but Taran Adarsh observed that this case has proved to be an exception. He remarked, “The curiosity for a franchise is on the downside this year. These films are made because they are part of brands or popular franchises. But with brands come great expectations. There’s also a big responsibility to deliver. Son Of Sardaar 2 failed to work. De De Pyaar De 2 didn’t do as well, though I heard it’s a decent film. Even Dhadak 2, War 2 and Baaghi 4 didn’t fire. Jolly LLB 3 and Housefull 5 did average business and have not exceeded expectations.”
