The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar had a very fascinating conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day about his various projects. He raised laughs when he spoke about Shah Rukh Khan.
The host asked Farhan if SRK saw his debut film Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and asked him why he didn’t cast him in it. Farhan smiled and said, “He didn’t ask me why he was not there in the movie because I had tried to reach out to him! I couldn’t get in touch with him. But I remember he came and watched the film at Famous Studios, Mahalaxmi. That was the first time we met professionally. I had met him a couple of times before that, but he met me as Honey Irani’s son, when Darr (1993) was happening.”
Farhan Akhtar then said, “When I was prepping for Lakshya (2004), I used to spend a lot of time in Delhi as that’s where the film was based and we also had to go to Dehradun. He was also in Delhi a lot at that time, as Gauri Khan’s family is based there and so are his friends. This is when we started meeting a lot. We shot the scene of Preity Zinta breaking up her engagement in a restaurant. That restaurant belonged to a childhood friend of Shah Rukh. When we were shooting there, the owner told me that ‘Hang out in the evening as Shah Rukh Khan would be coming’. That place turned into a bar at night. We met there as well. Later, we hung out at Band Stand.”
Farhan added, “There’s something very magnetic and charming about him. I asked him to do Don (2006) and he agreed.”
This is where he shared a hilarious anecdote, “The opening of the film was shot in Paris. We had finished shooting in Malaysia and that was the last schedule. I was in the director’s fatigue zone and it was the final week of the shoot. We have had many sleepless nights. It was quite cold in Paris and I got a severe neck ache. The entire part got frozen and I could only turn my head a little bit.”
Farhan added, “Shah Rukh asked me, ‘Tere ko kya ho gaya? I’ll fix it’. He made me sit down on the set. He said, ‘I’ll massage your neck and go really deep. It’ll ease out the pain’. He massaged and told me to consume a pill. He said, ‘Tu aaj raat so ja. Tomorrow morning, when you wake up, the pain will be gone’. I agreed. I took the medicine and finished the shoot for the day.”
Farhan Akhtar then said, “The next day, I was not even able to move my neck in the other direction (laughs). I told Shah Rukh, ‘Thanks, ha. That was superb’! So, he’s good at many, many things, but not when it comes to deep tissue massage!”
