Farhan Akhtar BREAKS silence on Honey Irani not being credited for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: “It was very HEARTBREAKING…but it’s all behind us”; also reveals that 2% of the producer’s profit goes to his writers

The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar had a very fascinating conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day about his various projects. Farhan also touched upon his mother, Honey Irani’s, contribution to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). She played a major role in writing the script of the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer. However, she was not credited for it. This resulted in her fallout with Yash Chopra, after which they never collaborated.

Farhan Akhtar opened up about this incident, “It was very heartbreaking for everyone concerned. The relationship my mother and we shared with Yash ji (Yash Chopra) and Pam aunty (Pamela Chopra) was something…we were all like one family. They (Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra) are still like my brothers when I think of them.”

Farhan continued, “Thankfully, all of that is behind us. Things happen between people who love each other. At some point, you have to find it within yourself to move on, forgive and forget. So, I am glad that it has happened because they are important people in the lives of all of us.”

He further stated, “It was unfortunate but the silver lining is that everyone has moved on and graciously so.”

Farhan Akhtar has achieved a lot of respect as he was one of the first producers to make it clear that he’ll pay his writers handsomely. On this, Farhan Akhtar stated, “It’ll be weird for me to talk about it. I am sure if you speak to our writers, they’ll tell you about their experience of working with Excel Entertainment. A long time back, we had also introduced a 2 per cent share with writers on the profit of films. 2 per cent of the producer’s profit goes to them.”

Farhan Akhtar’s father, Javed Akhtar, played a key role in passing the Copyright (Amendment) Act, 2012. He explained, “The musicians were not really getting their share. People in the West retired 30–40 years ago; they are living off royalties. We’ve had people who had 500 hit songs that they wrote or composed and died in abject poverty; it's a shame. Considering our music is one of the biggest reminders of our past, we remember films and actors because of it. For them not to get a share of their creation was terribly wrong in the system, and I am happy that my dad fought as hard as he could, and people are now getting deserved royalties.”
